She says "This lens that you've been using recently is white (70-200 f/4 IS). Wasn't the one I bought you for your birthday black? (the 70-300)" I told her that I simply traded with someone for the "white one" and she shrugged and says while walking away "I like the white one. It looks cooler". I love how technologically progressive she is, bless her soul :). All she knows is that she loves the images that I download to the computers. Once she figures out how to turn on the DVD player and switch to the proper interface on the LCD, I may start showing her more about the camera gear :)

She is still yet to notice that my Silver Rebel XT had miraculously morphed into a black 30D about a year ago.

ha.. that's too funny.. she is right though, the white one does look cooler.

Now that you have your fist white lens, this could open up new possibilities for you.

My 70-200 f4 IS magically morphed into a 70-200 f2.8 IS + 100-400L.

My 20D morphed into a 30D, then a 5D.

There was simply no explaining my 1D MKIII however...so I came clean.

"Oh this thing? Yeah...this is a much older model than my other camera (20D:cool:)...so I got it for the same price. It can shoot much faster..."

?? You just traded a 70-400 (550) for a 70-200 4IS(1000)? Nice.

Yes, I traded my 70-300 for cash. I traded my 70-200 f/4 non-IS for cash. And then I bought the f/4 IS new :), so technically I wasn't lying, I just left out the cash being the middle man part.

Photography is the first hobby that I have had where I HAVEN't had to explain my expenditures. I gave up trying to hide how my 350D and 70-300 mm lens suddenly morphed into my gear list.

Just curious at what point she caught on. Could it have been all the lighting that you bought that turned your living room into a room that looked like a NASA rocket lab?

Haha, same with me! I originally had a silver 300D Rebel a few years ago, and sold it to get a 20D. I figured she would immediately notice that my camera was no longer silver... but never a word. :D

See this is the problem with an honest relationship. He bores me to death with his guitar talk and I bore him to death with photo stuff. But now he knows that a red ring means more money. He knows too much about lenses!

My relationship is honest. She just mentions "Oh, I bought a new pair of shoes." I shrug and then notice the Manolo Blahnik box in the closet. I will just mention "Oh, I bought a new lens" and she will just have to get used to the white lenses and the red rings :).

My husband isn't terribly observant about things like this - for example, he didn't notice when my kit lens morphed into a Tamron 28-75. But I do think he'd notice if the 70-300 suddenly turned white. If ever I decide to trade, I'll have to prepare the ground first. It shouldn't be too hard; he's already offered to buy lenses and camera accessories as gifts in future. For next year's Xmas, birthday and mother's day gifts, he's offered a nice macro prime. Actually, the camera stuff is something of a relief for him; last time he asked what I wanted for my birthday, I requested a new competition dog, which set him back rather more than most lenses would have done and is now filling the house with hair and chewed cushions, as well as eating its way through a fortune in special food. Not to mention the frequent trips to competitions throughout Eastern North America (gas, hotels) because it's turned out to be a really good dog. And I exchanged my old car for a new van to transport all the dog-related stuff (shade tents, chairs, crates, etc.) So the odd unexplained lens is kind of a drop in the ocean, relatively speaking. He's a very patient man.

Hahaha. Fortunately both my Girlfriend and I are into both photography and cars. Sooooo..... I usualy goes like this:
girlfriend: " I 'm getting the flames painted on my transam this weekend."
Me:"OK Cool. I'm upgrading the camera from my XTI to the 40D."
Girlfriend:"Oh, you'll love it much better."

I did a major lens shakeup a while ago, essentially staying pretty close to even on money, but in the process, she's now told me "I have no idea what gear you have now." I could probably add two or three lenses and she'd never notice. However, I'd be broke, so it's not in the cards.

Thats the basement.

A funny story.

The other night, we had some words about something or another. I was actually in the process of cleaning up the basement, and had just finished folding up all of my litediscs, including my 6 ft panelite scrim (it goes in the little bag, although it takes 20 minutes to get it there.)

I told her I did not want to fight and went upstairs.

Big mistake.

She came up about 5 minutes later and tossed 5 empty litedisc bags at me, and walked away.

I went down to the basement, and they were all unfolded and laying all over the place, including the dreaded 6' panel lite.

I had to laugh. I think she won the arguement.

My wife don't usually notice which lens I have on. She sometimes think I'm using my zoom when I have my prime (both black) without the hood. Maybe if I'm getting a red ring to replace one of the black I could say "Oh, I sharpie it so that I can quickly find my favorite lens"

For now she categorizes like this:
Naked lens - no hood or anything -> Canon 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 MkII
Hooded lens -> Sigma 30mm f/1.4
White lens -> Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS

So far she has no problem with me buying more lens. I have more problems convincing myself on every purchase.

When I showed my a printout of the 40D page at B&H yesterday, she took one look at it and said "Buy it." She even agreed to the BG-E2N grip. Ever since I started making a little money with my photography, it's been much easier to justify purchases.

Earlier this year, I was looking at the new Tamron 70-200 f2.8 as a little bit longer fast lens than my Tamron 28-75 f2.8. When our tax refund came she said that since we got back more than we expected (because of the business deductions) I should get the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS instead of the Tamron 70-200.

I have no secrets from her when it comes to my camera gear. Keeping things from a spouse is bound to cause nothing but problems.

Just for the record, I'm not keeping anything from the wife. I really would love for her to get involved in the photography, but right now, this is my hobby as she's a tad busy with the whole being 8 months pregnant thing :). She flat out told me that I can spend whatever I want on this hobby, within reason with the second kid due in a little over a month. Main reason I got into this was to catch those moments of my kids for the future. She flat out told me that there is no price on the timeless images of our kids, so it's not hiding it from her, it's more just my thing to play around with. I'm putting my own spending limits on this hobby as I, unlike most of you, don't get paid a single penny for my shots. My payment is the amazing memories that I am saving of my incredible life.

It was her that got frustrated with the P&S images of the children in the first place. Mind you, I think she's very happy with the images now.

And yes, she does notice the increasing variety of lenses but hasn't said a thing. Mind you, she doesn't like it if I change bodies (350D to 30D).:) That's held me off buying a Mark III - but I have added a 35L, 135L AND 580EXII.

ahh where would we be without Bill Clinton's greatest contribution to US history - Dont Ask - Dont Tell...works for so many things!

the longer im married to my wife the more i realize she is above average in the smarts department, even though i knew that to begin with... shes pretty sharp - she knows all my gear and knows that 30D<40D<5D<1Dxx :-) she cant tell you why, but if my 30d grew up - she'd know! She even knows all my lenses, doesn't understand what the millimeters mean but she knows that i have a "wide" lens (17-40) a close up lens (100 macro) and a white lens (70-200 f4) - and on top of all that she knows my catalog of musical equipment too (a longer list than the camera gear...) pretty observant girl... no pulling fast ones especially since she watches the bank account like a hawk, not cause of my spending, but cause its interesting or something... so, whenever she wants to buy something i say - go for it honey! that way when the time comes for me to ask for something she only has positive memories :-)

Man, this thread is a classic. It is great to see a lot of others who think like I do....

I found that my wife feels sorry for me when she sees my disappointment in something I have bought because I thought it better to buy the cheaper option to save us a bit of money.

I recently showed her all the great sharp images that you guys with High quality L series lenses are taking and then show her some of my less than perfect images. I tell her "one day I hope i will be able to afford such a great lens so I can take images like that.
Next thing she is asking how much do they cost and before you know it she says "Oh go on just buy yourself a descent lens so you won't be so disappointed.. I love my wife.....God Bless her kind heart....

Now I'm just trying to decide do I get the 70-300 IS or the 70-200 f/4 or the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX APO HSM......:)

We don't have a rule exactly, but we usually talk about any purchase over $100 that isn't for something necessary (like running shoes or car maintenance). In general we are both very careful with money thats why I can afford to get into a hobby like photography.

This is one of those things were "YMMV" is most appropriate. But I'll tell you a story:

We were in Jessops one day, looking for a cleaning tape for the video camera. I pointed out the 1Ds MkII, and said "That's the best camera that money can buy". She said "Just buy it then." I pointed out that it was four and a half grand, and she just shrugged her shoulders. I knew that while the instruction to buy the body was there, it probably wouldn't have covered the set of lenses I'd need to buy as well. It was also not a sensible decision on her part. I didn't buy it.

Then, some years later, my grandmother passed away. The will was read, the bequest received. We put it towards the purchase of a new house. A couple of months later, a second bequest arrived. The house was paid for, the books balanced, the children's trust funds up to date. So I took my wife the cheque, and said "can we go to Jessops today?"

It was the start of me acquiring the gear I have now. I think that with my wife, the phrase "Patience grasshopper" is the most appropriate.

I am a blessed woman with a generous spouse who plays ignorant every time a holiday or birthday comes around. He is so busy, he knows "the talk" about gear purchases will end up with an uncomfortable time between us. He knows I am now in professional grade gear and anything of use to me will cost over $1k. So, he smiles and says to me (even the other day as yesterday was my birthday), "Do I need to buy you a present?"

"No, honey. Already done, and you were very generous." :);)

He smiles and walks away. Funny how those white zoom things end up in my new Domke bag. :)

i think the moral of the story is "fine as long as its within means". if other commitments are taken care of and nobody is starving or deprived of basic necessities, our better half are more likely to approve.

I think it's because the gear brings us so much satisfaction. I know just having a bag full of amazing tools makes me happy. My husband knows my commitment to it. I will start selling stuff I don't use soon or give it away. But right now, I use almost everything. That's just very rewarding.

She is still yet to notice that my Silver Rebel XT had miraculously morphed into a black 30D about a year ago.

[psycho music] She found the credit card reciepts! It's a "test"...[/psycho music]

I think it's because the gear brings us so much satisfaction. I know just having a bag full of amazing tools makes me happy. My husband knows my commitment to it. I will start selling stuff I don't use soon or give it away. But right now, I use almost everything. That's just very rewarding.
If you get to this point I will send you my address and a lovely thank-you card:D:D:D

This is so funny. I'm about to be let go after 25 years at my job. I've been back and forth on treating myself with a going away gift between a Sigma 2.8 70mm- 200mm or the Canon 2.8 non IS L but couldn't justify the $. Just this morning my wife asks me if I ordered the lens yet and I said no, I'm torn between 2, the black Sigma or the white Canon, so she to say's "get the white one, they look cool!...

Enough said...

After I type this I'll be on the B&H website:lol::lol:

This thread is so much fun to read! I'm the wife in this thing and hubby doesn't say much. If he does, I bring up his partnership with SnapOn (he buys from them more than I buy camera goodies)

He did notice the white lens I had - fortunately it was rented, but I did tell him it was so rented so I could decide on what one I really wanted! LOL

He doesn't say much since I make more than double what he does! Give me camera goodies over those pricey shoes anyday! (and I can get scrapbooking supplies cheap)

On one hand, I don't look at a lot of these camera purchases as simple expenditures; more like an investment. You can sell a lot of stuff for nearly what you paid - especially L glass. The loss you take could be considered a "long term rental fee" if you will. So it's not exactly the same as p*ssing money away on something you'll never get money back out of (shoes, tools, doilies, whatever).

I have told this story before and I will tell it again.

I got into photography because of POTN. I was researching a camera for my wife because our P&S wouldn't cut it with our then, 8 month old daughter. I bought her a Rebel XT, couple lenses, and some accessories. Well after a couple of months it was me using the camera and not her. I lived on POTN and did as much with photography as I could get away with.

Fast forward a year and we had some credit card debt from some dental work my wife had to have done (her veneers had to be replaced a few years early and not cheap). We didn't have the money saved to pay for it outright so we planned to transfer the balance to a no interest credit card. I thought I could sneak some new lens purchases in before the transaction, a Sigma 10-20, Canon 85 1.8, and Canon 100 Macro. Since I handle the finances and she only periodically checks in I thought I was set. Well one day she decided to check in on the finances and I was at work. She wasn't happy. She felt that I had betrayed her (which I had) and was also upset because that money could have gone to a swingset for our daughter. Man did that make me feel like crap. I am supposed to take care of my family and yet I got selfish wanting things for me (even though the 85 took some great shots of our daughter, the other two didn't get used much). So I sold the lenses, almost getting back everything I had spent, bought my daughter a swingset, and spent a lot of time earning back the trust from my wife.

Fast forward to today. My wife and I are expecting our second child, recently moved to a new house, and both have our own cameras. We worked out our problems and are very open about everything. I have been able to buy more gear within the last year then I would have thought. First was replacing my EF 70-210 with a 70-200 f/4 L. Then I was able to get a 40D. She bought me the grip, some extra batteries, and some strobist stuff for Christmas. We then bought an 85 1.8. Shortly after that we upgraded her Rebel XT (yeah I gave that back to her after I got the 40D) to a 30D and a 28-135 just for her (of course she can use anything she wants).

I am hoping that later this year I can get a Sigma 150-500 or similar and a Sigma 30 1.4 for the new baby shots. But I know we will discuss it first and that will be the better way to handle things. I learned my lesson.

It certainly depends on the tool. I have Snap-On stuff that Craftsman couldn't touch in comparison, like screwdrivers, ratchets, and specialty tools. But sockets was one thing I couldn't spend the extra dough on. The Snap-On and MAC toolboxes are also far superior. But my MAC was waaaayyyyy cheaper than an equivalent Snap-On.

I would add that most wives know exactly what's happening and are quite happy about it but won't admit it because it's stored away in the memory bank for future ammunition when the need arises.

And when God created women he used up all of his high-quality memory banks, so men each got a single, ureliable, short-term, chinese sweatshop knockout of brand-name stuff. That's why we run out of ammo before the fight even begins, and have to resort to pitiful sorry-ass self-defense methods. My wife, a sweet soul, even throws me a bone sometimes - "I'm surprised you didn't mention the time I did this-and-that... but then men don't have same kind of memory we do !"

Finding the right wife surely helps later when you start buying gear... :D

Definitely depends on the tool, you're right. Craftsman hasn't got a torque wrench worth a darn for example. And their ratchets aren't readily rebuildable either. As for toolboxes, no comparison. Craftsman isn't far above Harbor Freight in that regard except for maybe their top-shelf stuff, but still... Then there's availabililty. I forgot the exact size, but it was something like a 1/2" 38mm socket that I was looking for (flywheel nut, dang things are huge) the Sears peeps just kind of luck at you funny.

They're just trying to get the exposure of Canon. Thing is though, most of the time when you see a crowd of photogs shooting on white lenses, most people in the hobby are still going to think it's a Canon. If Nikon wants to stand out, they should paint their lenses pink for the girly-men that actually use their stuff (It's a joke you noinks :p  )

I don't know what this stuff is your referring to but that is a funny story. I can picture her mumbling "I'll show him who the boss is" as she un-bags all the gear and places it on the floor.

My wife knows every bit of gear I buy. She has to, she runs the money. She could easily slip something by me cause i simply don't pay attention. I recently wanted a 700-300mm IS and called her at work to tell her I wanted it. She said go ahead and order it then, funds will be transferred. I usually wait for stuff like this when my bonus rolls in or uncle sam gives some back. She already knows I am saving for something white. She gets the "camera thing" She started with a Sony Mavica with the floppy disk, then to a Canon G6 and thats when it bit me and I bought a 30D. She doesn't like how big it is but she does like the speed and quality of pics it can produce. Why hide something we both end up paying for? She is also the one who puts all new gear onto our personal protection insurance policy. My son, who is 3 now, has walked around with my 30D w/ 430EX flash, and taken pictures from time to time since he was 2-1/2 yrs. old. I know some might say "your crazy", but I want him to be hands on. He knows to use the neck strap.

Oh, and as a quick update, over lunch yesterday, wife told me I can upgrade from my beginner's camera (remember, she thinks that I still have an XT) to a brand-spanking new 40D. WOOT! I threw a couple things at her like auto-focus speed for taking shots of our son, AF accuracy, the Liveview so that even she can use the camera, and next thing I heard was "Sounds good. Go ahead and get it". I quickly turned the conversation to all the new words that our 2 year old is saying so that she couldn't second guess the decision. WOOT!

I love this thread... My wife knows that I have some expensive gear, and she knows that I want a few more lenses and a couple more cameras. I've been getting into Birding, and have found that the 70-200 IS with 2x extender is not enough sometime. She asked me what I can do to get the birds. I gave her three options... the Canon 1Ds Mark III and I could crop, so I went to Adorama and showed her the price. (Not exactly the camera I want BTW). I then said that there was another camera, the 1D Mark III, that will almost work.(Camera I actually want) She asked why it wouldn't work, I said I didn't have the right lens to use with it. She asked which lens, so I showed her the 400mm DO lens, which was $5500 I think. She said that both the Camera and lens would be too expensive. She asked if the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM would work with my 1.4x converter. (she remembered what that was) and I said it would. So I have now been authorized to get the 300mm lens and for my B-day present in September, I get the camera.

Crazy stuff in this thread, never thought of getting gear without telling the wife, but then again she's super cool and never says no....I think she figures if I want something I'm just gonna find a way to get it anyways, I'm the same with her. It's like unconscience reverse psychology, a lot of times once she says yes, I feel a bit guilty and decide I don't want it.
If you start hiding stuff, do you find that little things become bigger things? just a question, for me this type of behavior has led me down some dark paths

You both are guilty. The op for not saying he's getting new stuff especially when it's expensive, and his wife for trusting her own instincts and believing you when she doesn't know jack about photography (at least do you own secret research). You guys would drive me insane.

What a deal!!! New 300mm and a Mark III. Totally amazing.

My 70-200 f/4IS morphed into a 70-200 f/2.8 which morphed into the f4IS, which got pregnant, ran away with the 60mm macro and $300 and became the f/2.8IS.

My 17-55IS left me and I remarried a 24-105 and my 10-22 woke up one morning as a 17-40L. Come to think of it, I kicked the first 17-40L out for the 17-55IS.

This barely scratches the surface of my addiction as I am leaving out the tales of the 85 f/1.8, siggy 30 f/1.4, canon 28 f/1.8, canon 24 f/2, 300 f/4L, kit lens, as well as the D30, 2 XTs, a 20D, and other 40D.

Well, can't really hide anything in regards to photography expenditures from my wife, as she looks after paying the bills and such. So, we just base it (in most cases) on this.....She buys so much worth of clothing, shoes, and purses, etc.........And then I can buy so much worth of photo equipment. Unfortunately, my hobby is a lot more expensive than hers is!! LOL. :)

I prefer her 71 mustang to yours :p

This is such a great thread. I always tell my wife when I get new stuff - she's very understanding, but I just feel bad because she doesn't have any expensive hobbies!

Great stories! My wife surprised me almost 2 years ago when my 300D had to go in for repairs for a second time which was going to cause me to miss shooting 2 football games in a row. Upon hearing this and seeing the disappointment on my face she asked how much the new camera I'd been pining for (30D) would cost. I told her I had seen it for $1400. She sucked in a breath and wandered to the kitchen mumbling. She came back 15 minutes later and asked if I could get it in time for Saturdays game. I told her I could have it in 2 days if need be. She told me to order it and we'd sell the old camera upon it's return from the shop.
I sold the camera 3 weeks ago to my sister, completely blowing the initial sell by date. I recently bought a 1DmkII as an upgrade to the 30D and kept it as a backup. Never have had to hide any of my purchases from her since last fall she told me it was "time for the expensive equipment to start paying rent".
I started selling photos online and have been able to get my gear "fix" through the profits from my "hobby". When I get a new lens I show it to her and she asks for a new picture from it for her computer wallpaper at work to show off to her coworkers and clients. Her showing my work at her job has led to jobs for me so it's all good. Win, win for both of us.....although I do notice she has acquired some pretty nice hiking equipment lately......good thing I know nothing about that stuff! LOL
Shame on you guys!! Feeling guilty? ......I thought not!LOL
I love my wife.....no, really!

My wife knew I lusted after the 300L f/2.8 for a while. She came home from a business trip before last year's Super Bowl with the little Canon 300L cutout that was in USA Today. She gave that to me and said, "Here sleep with this since you want it so much." The next day she said go get the real thing! It was cool. I still have the life size cutout ad sitting on the nightstand. I use the 300L all the time!

Having no significant other, being a near college graduate, and having a dad who makes somewhat of a living off sports photography too, the only person I need to ask is myself.

Of course, I'm super picky anyway. The 300 2.8 and Mark II took 6 months of research - waiting for the right price and condition - and I still can't believe I actually have them!

I'd love to see a shot of your son using your 800mm...:) It must be as big as he is..

There is no 800mm. I put that in my sig just to see who notices. You were the first, lol. The biggest I own is the 100-300mm. He only ever carted around the 28-135mm kit lens. I don't know if I ever took a picture of him carting it around, I need to get on it.

This talk reminded me of a shot from a flickr contact. Hope he doesn't mind me posting the thumbnail:

My wife has a fairly good idea how much I have spent on equipment over the past year or so, and hasn't batted an eyelid, but I am afraid she did catch me out the other day.

‘Are you ordering something?’ She asked.
‘Errrrmmm… no. I’m doing this cashback thing from Canon, I should get quite a bit back on what I have spent this year’
‘That’s nice.’ She replied. ‘You can treat me to something nice with it when it comes through!’

Well I can hardly say no can I? (Even though it was going to be used as the starting point for my ‘L’ prime fighting fund!)

I am so lucky. My husband has always said get what you want. It’s become even easier since I started passing on my used cameras and lenses to him as I upgraded. The only thing he complains about is me spending weeks (sometimes months) trying to decide which lens, prime or zoom, IS or not, etc etc.

I tried an experiment the other day.

After several hot, sweaty hours chasing egrets at the shore I decided to give the gear a wipedown. I plop the 300/2.8 on the table along with the body and get to cleaning. The lens definitely caught her eye and even prompted a curious "wtf?" I said... "You've seen this one before. I usually don't use the hood because it's so big."

"Oh."

And that was the end of that! :p

The trick is to have a black lens, a black lens with a red stripe and a white lens. Anything beyond that looks the same and can be blamed on the others, like siblings. Heh.

I think I got you guys beat. My 20D morphed into a 1D MkIII. The 300 f2.8 was the hardest one to explain and required a story so long and complicated that she lost interest before I got to the end of it. I bored her into submission.

This thread inspired me....

The other night, my wife said, "Let me see that big monster of yours..." So I whipped out my 300 f2.8. She gasped, "Oh, it's huge!" I grinned menacingly and whispered, "Do you want to touch it?" She slid her hand along the shaft and exclaimed, "It feels so hard and solid, and the hood - it's gigantic! How do you carry that thing around?" I said, "It's a tight squeeze, baby, and it weighs me down, but it's worth it for the action it gets."

That settles it. I need to get some help.

My girlfriend gets pissed when I buy camera gear - "we are supposed to be saving for that trip to Ireland," etc. She watches what I am doing on the computer like a hawk and nags me when I'm on B&H or whatever, so I tell her I'm "looking at porn" so she'll leave me alone! :)

Next step for you all is get the beetter half to buy the better upgraded gear for you. My wonderful wife bought the 40D for me for XMAS less than a year after I bought a 350D. Then came the 100-400 L IS that she encouraged ... this weekend it will be the MP E-65 we will buy at B&H on a daytrip to NYC!!!!!

beat that!!!!

The key is to have many lenses. If you only have 2 or 3 she will notice an additional lens or one that dosen't look like the others. But.. if you have 10 lenses, some white, some black, some short, some fat, she will never know when you add, subtract or trade.

This theory served me very well when I was amassing my SIG SAUER pistol collection. At first it was difficult to slip a new one in but then I had so many she couldn't keep up.
