Instead of trying to explain this question, I've taken Belmondo's excellent visual aid and added what I think most new APS-C type lenses will be, meaning Canon EF-S, Tamron Xr Di-II and Sigma DC lenses. Maybe not exactly this, but something in between my example and a 35mm lens?
If this is the case, using these lenses on a full frame camera would certainly create a new term called, the "vignette factor". I don't believe the Sigma's use an EF-S mount, so you could theoretically put them on a 1 series camera (Good news for the 10D owners).:)
Just curious....
[EDIT: I updated the image to try and make it more clear]

so what's your question? :p Oh, sorry, I thought that was obvoius. The question is, does a Canon EF-S, Sigma DC or Tamron DI-II project an image circle that is smaller than a typical 35mm lens?

The EF-s lens is like that at it's wide end but gradually covers more as it zooms to the long end.It covers a full frame by about 23mm with some vignetting
<P>I'm not sure about the other brands

Ron,
So you are saying the image I drew is pretty close to what the 18-55mm is like at 18mm, but it gets closer to full frame at the 55mm end?
Do you remember the zoom of the picture you posted, or, umm, I mean the picture of yours that cmM posted? :D
