thanks guys! :)
for 5 and 7, the post processing is rather minimal. What makes it dramatic is the lighting. One light on both sides of her... you can see the lights in 7.
For 8, I used a polarizing filter (I MEANT to use an ND4 filter, but I grabbed the wrong one out of my bag and I left the bag in the car) to get a slow shutter speed. One slave flash at full power to my left to give a tiny bit of fill (At F/20 ISO100 and a polarizer, the 580 BARELY gives off any light), and for processing, used a curve mask to brighten up the buildings.

Nice work. Really love 5-8 (with 8 being amazingly creative! my favorite). Only nitpik would be with #1. With that PP, I don't feel the image is as good as it could be when it is viewed alone. However, when seen in the context of the slideshow, it fits much better.
And I see you shot #8 at f20. You should never go above f16 because lens refraction will cause softness. (J/K;). Someone always like to say that, but clearly this image is sharp. REALLY like that shot!) :D

Two 580s?
I attempted a shot nearly identical to #5 on Saturday with billowy clouds. (with 430s albeit) I jacked it up and it was THE one I really wanted to nail. So I'd love to know how you lit that one. Where they were positioned, ratio, etc. To get a frame of reference.

You used the 11-16 only for one of these pics... and then the 10-22 for the other UW photos.. my question is (I'm interested in buying the 11-16) could you have used the 11-16 for all your ultra wide shots and not miss the 10-22? how do you feel about the tokina?
great photos, I love 7.
I think 8 is slightly tilted to the left?

I actually *LOVE* her expression. It's the look of surprise. I think she too was a little caught off guard by the wind. I think it makes the shot. But it doesn't look as good at such a small size...
And I see you shot #8 at f20. You should never go above f16 because lens refraction will cause softness. (J/K;). Someone always like to say that, but clearly this image is sharp. REALLY like that shot!) :D
LOL, don't get me started. ;) I routinely shoot above F/16. Pixel peepers are more concerned with ultimate sharpness and less concerned with what it takes to get the shot. With what I had, I couldn't possibly do it wider than F/20.
This is why you're mad paid. #7 is just wild.

Light on the right was a 580EX on full power, 50mm zoom, on a light stand 13 ft high. Light on the left was a sunpak 622 at full power at standard zoom, about 7 ft high. The 622 is approx double the power of a 580.
You used the 11-16 only for one of these pics... and then the 10-22 for the other UW photos.. my question is (I'm interested in buying the 11-16) could you have used the 11-16 for all your ultra wide shots and not miss the 10-22? how do you feel about the tokina?
I use the two lenses quite differently. The tokina is used for ultra-wide natural light shooting. Typically indoors. The 10-22 is used for flash photos and outdoors. The 11-16 is quite prone to flare I have found, which wouldn't help me out at all for shots like 5 and 7. The 10-22 is extremely flare resistant. You can see the green flares in 7 on the left. That's about as bad as the flare gets on this lens, so it allows me to place all my light sources anywhere I want without worrying about flare or loss of contrast. The tokina doesn't handle these situations nearly as well.
So no, I do not feel that the tokina could take the place of the 10-22. Which is why I have both!

You're the master of that off-camera lighting stuff and I don't think I could ever get the hang of it, let alone want to go through the process ie schlepping light stands & such. Tell me though...what/whom did you first practice on? I can't imagine you took your first baby steps on client time...?

Wow Lloyd this is a really great bunch of images, well processed, well lit, and most importantly (assuming!) well thought/planned out. A bunch of these should definitely fall in your best of portfolio kinda category. I've never thought about shooting weddings with an ultrawide except for tight spaces, that and I don't have an UWA. Very inspiring!
I'm digging deep for a couple of nitpicks as without them we don't progress...
#1 - I find the lightbulb blurred out in the middle of the frame to be distracting
#3 - Love the perspective, not sure about the processing - I have a calibrated monitor and it appears to have a magenta cast to it, but I could be going crazy
#7 - might be better if you cloned out the two small flare spots?
That's really it for nitpicks, my only other complaint is that you are in Calgary so I can't tag along for a wedding and learn some of your awesome off camera flash tricks.

#7 is especially amazing. I'd make it my home web page image...
However, I assume you left us with the dramatic images and you also had plenty of, say, facial shots of the bride and the bride and groom. The bride appears to be absolutely gorgeous, but I can't tell from these images. Keep it up and keep posting. Stunning images!

No, definitely didn't take baby steps on clients, though it was rough at first and I just keep refining it as time goes on. I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with my technique.
I practiced like mad in my backyard. Trees, fences, dolls, cars, chairs, tables, anything I could get a cool background with and was small enough to light up. That's how I learned, in the days long before strobist existed. ;) My very first experiments were back in 1990 and really sucked and was a waste of film.

You must be one of the only people who doesn't like the ken burns effect. The vast majority of slideshows made for the last 4 years uses it. :)
But yeah, I do admit the pace is a little fast, but it's difficult to tell the FULL story of the day in about 3 minutes. Thanks for the critique

Life is good. I got a 5D in March with some of my company bonus money...I am loving this camera. I have been shooting 2nd for Suzy (SuzyView) and having a lot of fun with that...no pressure as the 2nd shooter...just relax and have some creative fun.
I also did a Honors funeral at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) in late April. I got some awesome shots of the horse drawn casket with the honor guard escort. I made the widow a 50 page 5x7 album of the funeral.
Hope all is well with you also, I love you photos...they always inspire...please keep posting :)

I use pocketwizards to fire flashes. It's the industry standard for ultra reliable triggering. No time to muss and fuss with unreliable triggering when on location and in a hurry. You gotta know it'll fire 100% and go.

I can't help but notice how often you used your UWA's on these images - were you using them close to the 10mm end? Hey Brad, most of the images were taken at the 10mm end. The moment in the trees shot was taken at 16mm though as I stuck the 10-22 onto the 1Ds mark III, which is pretty much the same as 10mm on my 40D. I figure if you are going wide, then go W-I-D-E!!!
I used the 17-55 for all the group formals, parts of the reception, some of the portraits, and some of the ceremony. I'm *trying* to learn to like the 24-70L, but it's sure an uphill battle. The range is well suited on a 1Ds though, so I don't hate it quite as much as before... I only hate it's inaccurate focus.
sorry, been away from the office and my online access is severely limited! Thanks for the kind words. :D

Thanks for the info Lloyd, I've moved from the brick back to the 17-55 as 24-70 was just a poor range for me on my croppers, I'm sure it's deadly on the 1 series though! I'm selling off a few lesser used items and I'm trying to decide between a nice fast prime for natural shooting, or the Canon 10-22. I've wanted an UWA for a couple of years now as when I'm not shooting for pay I favor landscapes, and seeing your work with UWA for weddings is really inspiring, makes me wonder what creativity it could lend me as well.

I use my UWA a LOT more than fast primes. But that's just my style. Most people think I'm insane for using the wide as much as I do. And I have to admit, it took a long time to figure out how to do it without making people look too funny or distorted.
Might as well just add, the 17-55 is the bread and butter lens. It gets most of the shots, and does an excellent job. But when you want to get creative, you move away from the bread and butter. And typically, when you post shots, you show the more interesting ones. So don't let the lens list fool you, the 17-55 is a very important lens in my lineup. So important, that I have two of them, even though I have two cameras that it doesn't even fit on! LOL
