Histogram used for better pictures?

Having a new camera such as the 300D is great to practice with using all of the options that digital provides. AT this time of the year with all of the indoor pics and the pleasure of having a 4 year old to practice on---I need some direction on using the history option to improve on all of my pictures. The autobracketing and different ISO settings can keep me busy for hours,some history knowledge will really keep me busy. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
