So, I've just replaced my Lowepro Compurover AW (http://products.lowepro.com/product/CompuRover-AW,1923,16.htm) with a much more compact Kata DPS DR-467 (http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=401&cid=28&perentId=4&ProdLine=4). It's a backpack with a laptop section, a day section, and the camera section at the bottom. Build quality is outstanding - it feels incredibly well built, and protective.
Weight & size is excellent - sure the bottom could be a bit more spacious, but I can still fit in my 40D with 24-70 (+ reversed hood) on, my Sigma 10-20 (+ reversed hood), Sigma 30mm (+ reversed hood), and just about my 70-200 f/4 (+ hood reversed). On top of that, there's still a bit of space for a couple of batteries and memory cards. It's a bit of a squeeze to get the 70-200 f/4 in - it's the very longest lens you can fit in the bottom section.
In the top section, there's plenty of space for other stuff - it's the same size, or larger than the top section in the Lowepro Orion Trekker. On the outside of the bag are three zipper pockets for odds and ends. There's also a slot to feed out your headphone wire, should you want to keep your music player in your bag.
As I said, the weight is excellent - the bag weighs less than 1.5kg (approx 3lb) empty, but even fully loaded, the padding is so well placed, that I find it far less tiring wearing this bag, than the Compurover it replaces.
You also get a free waterproof cover (think detachable Lowepro AW cover), and 5 year warranty, extended to a lifetime warranty on registration on the kata website (http://www.kata-bags.com/Warrenty.asp).
My one quibble with the bag, is that you need to be careful with it - like the Tamrac expedition bags, it's possible to get into the camera compartment with it on your back, so if carrying on public transport, beware.
Would I recommend this bag? Absolutely! Sizewise it's very close to a Lowepro Orion Trekker, but in terms of capacity, and comfort, it feels closer to a Lowepro Compurover AW - no mean feat! (photos to follow)

Thanks for the info! I'm really looking at getting this bag but am wondering if my 70-200 2.8L will fit in it. Sounds like it might be a bit snug if it does fit...

No worries :D. Nope, the f/4 only just fits in - the f/2.8 would have to either lie down (not sure that you could organise the dividers to support that, or sit in its case in the top section.

I just ordered DR-467
At first i almost went with the more rugged r-103, but then decided that i don't really need that much space for camera stuff only. And i think that the 467 is better because it looks more "normal" to my eye. It's also great to have some extra storage for other stuff.
Only downside in the 467, that i can think of, is that it can't hold a tripod. But well.. as they say: perfect photo bag does not exist.

You may be able to attach a tripod - on the bottom left (when looking from back / side, there's a little pocket I just found with a net pocket which comes out, so you can probably use the straps on the front to hold it in place, and put the feet in this little pocket.
I can snap a shot of it to show you what I mean

I think i understand what you mean. I was looking at the smaller version of this bag in a camera shop yesterday and noticed those small pockets on the sides. I didn't open the left one though.. the right one had a bottle holder if remember correctly.
Let's see if i can fit my Feisol in some of the pockets! I can put some images here next week, unless you beat me to it :)

Ah, you must be right - it's about the right size to be a bottle holder - there's only one on one side. I don't have a tripod, so I can take a picture of it with a bottle in, but can't see if you can squeeze the tripod feet in :).

Ok,
So i promised i would post some pics of the bag. And also to check if this bag is also capable for carrying a full sized tripod.
I got this bag today, and i am very impressed. This is really a perfect bag for me, it does it all. I can fit all my photo gear in it ( for now ) and i can also grab my laptop with me and i am still left with a whole compartment for other essentials like sunglasses, phone, key, cigarettes, light jacket, water or what ever :)
I see this as the perfect flight bag also, because it really can fit all the expensive stuff that i want to take with me and i can also carry other essentials needed on a flight. Very nice indeed, and whats best is that this bag very well made the padding is nice and it does not even look like a camerabag! Fantastic.
I promised that i will take some pics, so here it goes. And as customed here.. .i am sorry about the poor quality of the images, my DSLR was in the bag and took these with my gf's PS.
This is what i have.
Canon 40D+17-55mm
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 55-250mm
Sigma 10-20mm
Canon 430ex
Laptop
Off shoe cord
raincover
Remote shutter with remote
table tripod
Feisol CF tripod
And some other small stuff like batteries, whitecard, cleaning cloth
1. Here's everything

2. Here's the photo stuff in the lower compartment
http://www.galleria.kusti.info/albums/userpics/10001/normal_P6270004.JPG
3. 15" laptop fits in nicely in the back
http://www.galleria.kusti.info/albums/userpics/10001/normal_P6270006.JPG
4. You CAN fit the tripod quite nicely on it by using the straps and the little sidepocket ( i guess it's intended to be a bottle holder ).
http://www.galleria.kusti.info/albums/userpics/10001/normal_P6270001.JPG
5. And one from the other side
http://www.galleria.kusti.info/albums/userpics/10001/normal_P6270002.JPG
6. Even though there is a quite nice basic photokit in there, the upper compartment is left almost completely unused. Fantastic. In the future i guess i can fit a 70-200 f/2.8 in there.. :)
http://www.galleria.kusti.info/albums/userpics/10001/normal_P6270005.JPG
I can definately recommend this bag for someone looking for the same things as i were in a backbag. Stealth look, enough space ( but not too much ), not just for camera stuff, and very well built.

Ok, rather than just edit my original post, I have less gear now, but I have a quick photo with the bottom loaded.
In it is 1DM2 with 24-70 f/2.8 mounted.
Top left is Tamron 2xtc (though I'll probably replace it with my flash)
Bottom left, is full size Giotto rocket blower
Middle bottom is my CF cards
Top right is Sigma 10-20
Bottom right is empty.
The 70-200 f/4 L can just about squeeze in, but I now have a 70-200 f/2.8 which is too tall (though it fits in the center pocket, but there's no way I can fit my camera in if it's there, and it's too tall mounted on the camera) to fit in, so it sits in the top section.

Thanks for your review! i think this is the bag I want to get. I was originally looking at the Adventure 7 or 9 but this looks like a better choice. the option to carry a laptop is cool. I didn't catch it in your post but does the 55-250 mounted on the camera fit in the bottom compartment?

I am not sure who are you asking this, The OP or me, but i'll answer anyway :)
Yes, it does fit, the 55-250 is only about 0,5cm longer than the 17-55mm. But i must admit that there isn't room for any longer lens than that when mounted on the camera, well comfortably anyway!

Thanks! I only plan to carry 2 lenses anyway, the 55-250 and the 17-85. Looks like a great bag and its cheaper too!

Yes it is, actually it's very cheap for a Kata bag. But of course, this one lacks the Turtles feel that most of Kata bags have :) But to me it was a good thing.. i want't to blend in to the crowd :)
I am sure you will not be dissappointed with this one, it's a nice!

I'm looking into purchasing this bag but i was wondering if it will hold an Apple MacBook Pro 17"... I cannot find some size specs for just the Laptop compartment. The specs i've seen say it will hold up to a 17" but i wasn't sure if that included an Apple.
Anyone know if it will fit or not?
Thanks

I happened to be on the computer and playing with by camera, so here is your anwer.
This laptop is HP NX 6110 and it's 32,8cm wide and 27cm deep.
As you can see there is about 2-3 cm space left on the side, and about 5cm space left on the top. I am not sure what are the dimensions of your Apple but i think you can measure it yourself :)
Here's the image.

Thanks for that, it helped to work it all out.
here are the specs of the Apple i have:
Height:
2.59 cm (1.0 inch)
Width:
39.2 cm (15.4 inches)
Depth:
26.5 cm (10.4 inches)
Weight:
3.08 kg (6.8 pounds)
Depth wont be an issue... Width could be but it may squeeze in... Hopefully! :)

There is about 6cm space on the top when HP is in there, so it should fit, but it's gonna be close. But my guess is that you can squeeze it in there :)

I just got the 465, and it's beautiful. For the price, well worth it. Barely fits my 5D with 24-70 attached, but it's what I wanted.

9th of July 2008 (Wed), 03:32
Yeah, since I bought it, I've changed from 40D to 1DMII, and it just fits in with the 24-70 f/2.8 L attached.

Yeah, it's not the biggest bag. Especially the camera space could be a little bit higher, but this bag is just what i was looking for, i didn't want a huge bag that can only fit camera stuff.
It's always a compromise..

9th of July 2008 (Wed), 06:07
Agreed - it would be nice if there was an extra inch in the camera compartment, but I'd prefer it smaller, and the bag smaller overall. I can simply put my 70-200 in its lens case in the top compartment, and still have space for 1D+24-70, 10-20, rocket blower, 2xtc and more in the bottom compartment.

The Kata 465 is significantly smaller than the Adventure 9 I have and lighter, less stiff, so hiking will definitely be easier. Also, the Adventure 9 is for traveling in planes and in urban areas where I need my laptop and gear. That is a big bag. The next size bigger Adventure series is new and really so big, I can't carry it.
Kata workmanship is excellent. I think their little swirl logo is useful and attractive to men and women. Good going, Kata!

I was asked to post one image of me using this bag, so here it goes.
It really is not a Huge bag, but it's definately not small either, but i would say it's on the bigger side anyway. If you're looking for a little backbag to carry stuff around, this might not be your choice, if you're looking for a smaller bag -> Kata DR-465 ( same bag, no laptop space and a little bit smaller top compartment )
Sorry i didn't have a better image, it's the usual photographer syndrome; you never have images of yourself :(
In this image, there is not much stuff on the top compartment, and also the laptop compartment is empty. It makes the bag appear smaller.
( please.. no comments on the reversed hood, i know it's reversed :) )

You mentioned security as a potential problem with this bag. I noticed that Kata doesn't use normal metal zippers. Are the fabric zippers just flat, or are they loops?
If they're loops. could you threat a caribiner through them for some added security?
SuzyView
25th of July 2008 (Fri), 23:43
Not metal zippers, but secure. Wouldn't want to force it, though.
ace97302
26th of July 2008 (Sat), 20:02
So do they have loops you could slide a carbiner through or other fastener through to secure the bag a little to help prevent pick-pockets from getting into it in crowded places?
That works pretty well with normal zippers with loops on the end. I'm wondering if it's possible with the Kata zippers?
johnz
27th of July 2008 (Sun), 05:28
The zippers are not like the "normal zippers", so there isn't this piece of metal and in the end a hole. But you might be able to do it, if you find the right size lock. ( i don't know what a carbiner is.. bad english ).
I can post images of the zippers later this evening.
ace97302
27th of July 2008 (Sun), 19:11
Oh, I'm sorry. That was a typo. It should have read "carabiner." (also spelled karabiner I believe)
They're basically a metal loop with a clasp that can be threaded through things. Real ones are used for climbing and ropework, but low-grade (meaning weaker and generally less secure) ones are sold for use as key rings and the like.
I guess, think of it as a small lock without a combination or key :)
Pictures would be great! Thanks.

I can fit my 100-400 L in the camera compartment hood reversed, so i really don't see a problem with a 70-200 f/4.
You also have to think do you need the lens to fit in the bag while it's mounted on the camera, no way i can fit my 40D + 100-400 in there when mounted, atleast not in the lower compartment. It does fit in the upper though, but that's not a very nice way to carry you stuff..

Sure - will do tonight. I'm impressed the 100-400 will fit in, because the 70-200 f/4 is the longest possible lens that could squeeze in for me.

It does fit, in the camera space i keep.
340 EX Flash ( left side )
10-20mm Sigma ( left side )
40D + 17-55mm mounted ( center )
100-400 L ( right side )
Of course the 1-4 is a tight fit, and it's not easy to close the compartment with that in there, but it's doable.

Thanks to all those who posted great shots on here I picked this bag up yesterday. I can actually fit the 70-200 2.8 IS L in the bottom with the hood reversed, and it's totally usable that way (though certainly not ideal). You just have to angle it. I can also get a 5D, 24-105, 16-35 II, 50 1.8, and 430 EX in the camera compartment all at the same time. I wouldn't call it a working arrangement, but it would suffice for travel. I'll post pictures this afternoon.
Also, as to the questions regarding security and accessability while it's on your back, I've found that it's pretty easy to access the camera without taking the bag off, similar to how the new Lowepro fastpacks work (kind of like a poor-man's sling).
To deal with the security problem, I've found a couple of solutions. First of all, you can pull the zippers all the way over to the side of the bag where there are some tabs designed to prevent the lower compartment from opening too wide. If you tuck the zippers under one, it would be pretty hard for a thief to get at them deftly. You can step up the security a bit further. The first option is to clip a small carabiner through the zippers. That doesn't lock the camera compartment, but it ensures that it takes some time to open it. If you want to be really secure, you could easily put a combination luggage lock through the zippers.
I'm really impressed with this bag. Also, I'm pretty sure that you could use the compression straps to rig up a system to hold a tripod.

Thanks for all the photos - really helpful - I have just bought a lowepro 200 mail order but am returning it - too "stiff" .... I am thinking about getting a DR465 instead - do you know if the bottom compartment is the same size? Jackie

The official internal measurements of the DR-467 are 13" x 5.9" x 7.5". However, while the camera compartment has a good deal of padding, it's really quite flexible. The front flexes out beyond 5.9", and if something is taler than 7.5", it just presses up into the bottom of the upper compartment a little. Conversely, something very heavy in the upper compartment presses down on the top of the lower compartment a little. There's [plenty of padding between the layers, so I wouldn't worry about damaged gear unless you do something crazy.
So here's the lower compartment with the 70-200 2.8 L IS in it. As you can see, it doesn't fit as nicely as the f4; it has to be angled. It's not a terrible pain to open the compartment with it in there or anything.
http://ace63105.zenfolio.com/img/v1/p1000642718-4.jpg
Pictured here (L to R): back: 430EX, front: 16-35 2.8 L II; b: 50 1.8 I, f: 5D w/ 24-105; 70-200 2.8 L IS. I don't have the hoods on in this photo. The 70-200 hood will fit in there reversed. I actually find the 24-105 hood reversed in that configuration to be a bit tight. With a lens smaller than the 70-200 it's fine.
Here's a little clearer view of how it sits in there:

Also, you can see that a 5D w/ 70-200 2.8 IS L mounted fits in the upper compartment. The 70-200 2.8 L will also fit in there in a padded case. I find the upper compartment padded enough to use as a quick place to stash my gear, but I wouldn't toss the bag around with stuff up there!

I should add that it's much more convenient in my opinion to have the camera turned horizontally (parallel to the bag opening). With it turned perpendicular to the bag opening as it is in my first photo in the previous post, it's it little more awkward to take out.
This is a much more ideal working arrangement:

Pictured (L to R; B to F): 430EX; 50 1.8 I / hoods, extra batteries, caps, and cleaning stuff; 5D w/ 24-105 mounted / 16-35 2.8 L II, 16-35 hood (it's big and awkward).
Here's a shot of the above arrangement without the camera obstructing things:

Nice - I have my camera perpendicular, so that the eyepiece doesn't get pulled off, when I open the bag - but if I put my camera the other way round, it should be fine - will give that a go.

Thanks everyone for the great pics and thorough reviews of this bag. I'm sold! I currenltly have a Crumpler 7MDH and was looking at upgrading to the Crumpler Customary Barge - but the Kata DR-467 wins the prize and at a price that can't be beat! I'm so excited to have found this bag - and I haven't even had one on my bag yet.
This site has been exteremly helpful to me and I appreciate everyone on it.
Thanks again.

I was looking forward to buying a bag to put all my gear and you guys have given enough reason to go for this one.
Just a last question, can i fit my Canon 70-300mm in the camera compartment?
(I saw the e70-200 F4 and F2 fit in quite comfortably but the 70-300 is just a bit bigger than both,so if anyone has tried it please let me know)
Thanks

Well, the 100-400 L does fit in there so the 70-300 shouldn't be a problem.

Travis31, isn't the 70-300 IS *smaller* than the 70-200's? My 70-200 2.8 L IS is 7.7" long and 3.4" in diameter (even bigger with tripod mount and hood reversed).
I don't have a 70-300, but B&H lists it as being 5.6" long and 3.0" in diameter. If that's the case, it will fit without a problem. I don't think it could go in the camera compartment mounted unless you put it in laying down however.

I had the Customary Barge, but sold it and bought the DR-467. It is a nice bag, but it is so well padded that it is very bulky. I think it held less gear than the the Kata, but since it is well padded, it is much larger and sticks out from your bag considerably more.

You have to slightly pull the zips up and over the corner of the mac but once its in everything is snug. At least the tight fit means the laptop doesnt move around when walking/running

Its not a majorly majorly tight fit but you certainly wouldn't fit anything bigger in there. You have to make sure the laptop is sat in the center of the bag before the zips will go over the corners of the laptop.

I got this bag 6 months ago and quite satisfied with it. I am really glad to see this thread hearing a lot of good discussion about the bag I am using!!! :D So I want to contribute a little by sharing how I organize the inside of the bag to fit my specific need.
My equipments
-5D with grip
-24-105 F4L
-70-200 F4L
-580EX
-2 baterries for 5D + reserve AA batteries for camera and flash + AA battery slot for grip + some memory cards + rocket blower + some filters, flash diffuser, etc.
-When travelling + 3 battery chargers.
My requirements of the space
-I want to store the camera with either of the lens I have attached without the need of re-arranging the partitions. I want to keep the other lens and flash together in the lower compartment, so I can conveniently throw any other stuffs in the unpadded upper compartment without worring about the safty of my lens each time I open the zipper or want to throw in some junks. And finally, I want my equipments fit in the lower compartment without too much force (I just don't like the feeling of forcing the camera in and out of the bag)
The arrangement
-Use the 2 yellow pads that come with the bag to make 2 small slots inside the compartment. Buy a cheap small pouch (mine with zipper), put batteries and others in it, and place it in front of the 2 slots. Place camera (grip down) in it, the lens portion is supported by the pouch. Just fit my need, and it is simple enough. I am planning to buy 17-40 soon, so when it arrives I think I will move the 580EX to the upper compartment, and place the 17-40 in its place (I think I can put them all in the lower compartment though but I don't want to have it too tight there).
Here is the drawing of the arrangement of the lower compartment (sorry for poor drawing skill ). I am not available to take the picture of it but with a lot of photos in this thread I think it would be easy to imagine from my drawing.
Not a great contribution, just want to share my part. Hope it is helpful ;)

7th of October 2008 (Tue), 05:14
so you have your camera sideways in the pouch? how easy is it to take out?
I'm currently using an orion trekker II, and am looking for something with more camera space, but still with day space above. My setup is 50D/24-105/70-200f4IS/100-400/85 1.8.
I'd like to take the 50D+24-105 and 85 1.8 and either of the longer zooms. Looks from your example that the 70-200f4 will work (either on the camera or off which is good), but how about the 100-400? would that fit sideways like that?
never used a Kata but heard good things. Also considering a fastpack 250 which might just be big enough, or maybe a 350 which is probably overkill. or an adventurer but they look too big. I'd like something around the same size as the orion trekker or just slightly larger.

Glad you like it, Johnz!
mrklaw, I am not sure I understand your question well about the camera sideway in the pouch, so sorry if my answer does not answer your question properly.
But let me put it this way. I store the camera so the bottom of the battery grip is down (flash hotshoe is up). The lens attached to the camera lies along the longest sides of the compartment (in my case when 70-200 is attached, still there are some room at the end, so I think it is OK for even a bit longer lens attached). Now when your 5D is gripped, its dimension will become more like the 1D and you need to put something to put underneath the lens portion so that the camera sit down securely. So I choose to find some small pouch or small bag to be that something to support the camera. And I can put all the battery and small stuff inside the pouch. In case your camera is without grip, you will not need anything to help it stand, so you can just sit it in there. But then you will lose storage space (becuase I do not want to put anything on top of the camera and lens for the sake of easy taking in and out). If that is the case, I would put 2 pouches in there, one underneath the base of 5D, another underneath the lens. Obviously you have more space now. Another idea is to put the flash in its original canon pouch that come with it, you can put the flash underneath the lens, and another pouch underneath the camera. Then you can put another lens in the slot that I store 580EX in my drawing.
If you arrange the 2 slots in the right angle and size, the camera fits in nicely, and not difficult to put in and out at all (that is my objective in the first place).
I am really sorry but I do not know the size of the 100-400. But I think it will be too tall to put in one of the slots (unless you don't mind pushing it a little hard, which I do not like). On camera may be OK though (not sure).
Anyway, remember you still have the whole empty upper compartment to put at lease a few more lens in case you want (but you may want to find a soft cover to protect it a bit).
As an alternative, you may want to check out the new flipsides 400. I really like it, but will not buy it because I already have this Kata and no meaning to just buy another bag. It has much more room to install all your equipments and more, the outside pocket is quite big (not as big as Kata though) for your day spece. It is around the same size as Kata, and about the same weight (capacity for camera and lens is much much bigger), there is a tripod holder, it opens from the backside and you can turn it around and maker it a small table for changing lens and all even when you are standing.
Kata is great too (looks nicer in my opinion), but you may want to check both before you decide.
Hope it helps.

Got a DR-467 today from BH, it's on sale @BH for $59 now.
Initial impression: great built quality, nice design, my only wish is, it would be perfect if they can make the bottom section a little bit higher (maybe 1-1.5 inches by reducing the upper section), this way the bag may fit the most popular tele-zoom: 70-200/2.8.

I've had this bag for about a month now. Overall, it's a great bag, very well built, and for the most part, comfortable. I don't have any "huge" lenses like the 70-200, so trying to stuff that one in isn't an issue for me. Empty, the bag is surprisingly light for a pack of this size, padded enough to carry a laptop.
For me, it lacks a couple of features that I'd want, like a simple way to carry a tripod. More important, though, is the bag lacks an adequate belt for carrying heavier loads. A 2" (50mm) belt would be more appropriate and fitting for a pack of this size, and would provide a more suitable way of attaching accessories or a water bottle pouch. 1"? What were they thinking?
With a wider belt and loops or straps for a tripod, the bag would be a 100% winner.

I have this bag. It is pretty much perfect for me. I attach my tripod on the side with the mesh pocket holding one end and the strap securing it to the side. This works better than I thought it would.
For travel, I get everything stuffed into the bottom compartment. For walking around I put the body and lens in the top section (easier access, to drawer to pull out and put back in).

Cany any one having this bag confirm if 70-200 2.8 IS or 100-400 fits in the top compartment with there protective bags provided by canon or is it well paded to fit a 70-200 2.8 IS by itself.
Will there be enough space in the bottom for a 16-35 II mounted on 5D II and 85L and 24-105.
Thanks in advance.

The 16-35 II mounted on 5DMKII fits but you need to take off the hood in order to not hog too much space at the bottom. I turn my hood inside out but I can't fit much else in the center of the bottom section. I can also comfortably stuff the 24-105L down there, too. Not sure about the 85L.
On the top, if you're going to put two lenses you need at least one in a bag. I leave my 5DMkii with lens in the top compartment and it has room to spare.

I've been hauling this bag all over Japan for the past week. I'm lugging a laptop plus everything in my gear list below plus extra batteries, chargers, blower and miscellaneous stuff. It's pretty heavy. I feel I couldn't have made a better choice. The reason is, even with the tripod attached to the outside the profile of the bag is very slim which really helps in a very crowded train. when it's crowded, I take it off and set it on the floor between my legs and it only takes up the same footprint as me. It is sardine-can compatible.

After a few weeks of using this bag as a student, I love it. You don't need the monopod deal to get value out of this bag! It holds a notebook and textbook in the laptop compartment easily. I can fit a calculator, a stapler, pencils and plenty of room for other stuff in the top compartment and it easily fits my 1DMkIIn + 17-40. I haven't really tried it with more lenses than just what's on it though as I want a simple kit that limits me to really thinking about how I shoot when I'm walking around.

Johnz, referring to your post #9, I have/will be getting similar equipment, but can you fit a 40D with a battery grip in the bottom compartment of the DR-467 with lenses/flash?
I have- 40D + BG-E2, and Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 attached (which I assume is similar in size to Canon 17-55mm)
Other lenses: Canon 50mm f1.8 II, Tamron 55-200mm
And hope to be getting a Sigma 10-20mm and Speedlight in the near future.
Many thanks.

Unfortunately i don't have a grip, and my friend who had one got his camera stolen :( So i can't test it. But if you look at this image, you can see that it would be quite a tight fight if the camera would be 3cm higher, but i guess you can make it work by adjusting the foam pieces around a bit. I bet someone who has commented in thread has a grip and can confirm?
In post #10 seems to be quite close to what your trying fit in the bag.

Thanks for the replies Johnz and Jbkalla.
I currently have a tiny Lowepro Rezo 160, which can fit the 40D (without grip) and Sigma 18-50 attached, and either the nifty fifty or grip on the side.
I am also considering a Crumpler Farmer's Double, LowePro CompuRover AW or Lowepro FastPack 250, but again it is hard to find if your gear actually fits without seeing it in the flesh or finding somebody with similar gear!
Route246
1st of March 2009 (Sun), 12:14
I ordered a Crumpler and returned it. I thought it was too heavy, bulky and inefficient. I'm not gentle on my gear and I think Crumpler is very gentle on gear, given the mount of padding that's there. If you want something to protect your gear like your first born then Crumpler probably fits the requirement.
I went down to the local camera store and compared Crumpler with all of the other brands and confirmed my impression. That's probably the last time I order something sight-unseen based on reading reviews online.
When I saw the Kata bags I was first impressed by the design and then very impressed with the efficiency and light weight. They lack the absolute protection of Crumpler but they are certainly good enough for me. It was the trade-off between lightness and protection that sold me on the Kata 467. This is not to say the Kata is like a grocery bag, either. It is well-padded and protects my gear just fine. I think it is the perfect bag for me. But, that's me. I wouldn't dispute anyone's criticisms of Kata. I just think they have a pretty nice product and they are priced below everyone else to boot.

I need a new bag that will meet the tight airline cabin baggage for Ryanair (Yuk) which is 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.
The official external specs for the DR467 are 21x34x45cm so it looks like it might just squash down (from 21 down to 20cm depth).
Can someone tell me when this bag actually has gear in it, what is the external depth measurement? Is it 20, 21 or greater?
Also, for those users that have a canon 70-200 2.8, will this fit on a body with grip into the daypocket.

It should scrunch down. Worst case, you can take something out and store it in a separate padded bag or something in order to scrunch it down. I am very impressed by the space efficiency of this bag. It is extremely lean and mean for what it needs to do. I realize I did not answer your question but given the numbers you mention, I wouldn't worry about the 1cm oversize. It's a "squish-able" soft bag with no rigid frame inside.

OK. The 40D with a shorter lens and battery grip will fit, but there's not much room for other stuff. I'll post photos later. It's almost too small for the 40D and a normal lens when you have the battery grip. I was going to take it somewhere this weekend, but needed more space and ended up taking the Tamrac Adventure 9. Does Kata offer a pack between the DR-467 and the HB-207? I have both. The HB-207 is too large for anything except serious backpacking/camping and the DR-467 is too small for most things. A Kata the size of the Tamrac would be ideal. Though I guess I can use the HB-207 rainscreen on the Tamrac if I need an intermediate pack in inclement weather...

Thanks for the feedback. I've ordered the 467. Kit may be a bit of a squeeze i suspect, but most bags which have more equipment accomodation exceed the 20cm size limit which is imposed by many of the European budget airlines for carry-on hand luggage. They are now getting very strict on hand baggage sizes.
I will post an update when it arrives. I have to fit a 40D+grip, 70-200 2.8, 17-40 f4L, 10D body, 1.4 conv, and potentially 550EZ+quantum battery.

I put my body and lens in the upper half and leave the lower half 2/3 full. If I put the body and lens in the lower half, it's a hassle to take out quickly. It can be done but it's a hassle because of the snug fit. It's better protected, though. It still has the laptop sleeve area to put a book or something if necessary, just in case you're not carrying a laptop. I have a very small laptop so I put it there plus a book.

I really wish they'd make a version with a larger bottom section. Plus, the opening of the bottom isn't very smooth, especially with other stuff in the top bearing down. The quality is fantastic, though, like all Kata bags...

I agree that the process of opening it is not smooth. That's why I use the top for the body and lens (most of the time). If I'm traveling and know I won't need to shoot anything I stuff everything in the bottom. But, if I'm "walking around" I move the body and lens to the top for very easy access, knowing everything else I need is now within quick access.

I just purchased this backpack after reading the reviews on this site and several others. I stumbled across B&H which has it on sale right now for $64.95 and free shipping. Was the cheapest I found browsing around the usual commerce site suspects :)

Lucky i guess if you are in the USA. In UK the 467 is normally around GBP 68.00, but i managed to purchase one from a Ebay.co.uk shop for GBP 57.00 inc postage.
It arrived today, and i am impressed. As per photos in this thread a 70-200 2.8 can fit at the bottom, but does take up 2 slots and needs to be angled. A body at the bottom with a grip i think will be too large.
However the 70-200 + body + grip as one unit will easily fit in the top section which is quite large.
Basically when travelling it will be a case of disassembling all the kit so most fits in the bottom extra padded area (if i take a lot of kit then the 70-200 may go in the more exposed top section, but in its padded canon case.
When actually on location as per the previous posts, the camera/grip/lens can be temporarily placed in the top section for easy and quick access.
This bag is also incredibly light, compared to a standard laptop/rucksack (non-photo) that i have which is of a similar size.
It also blends in with all the standard rucksacks so isn't obvious.
It would have been handy if it could of had some loop through straps that would of enabled a tripod to be attached to the bottom, or a proper adaptor that could be attached to the side (rather than the work-arounds suggested using the water bottle holder which will probably give way after time).
A slightly larger bottom section would also be great, but not too large as my main reason for buying this bag is that it meets the very tight buget airline European hand bagage size (currently the shortest dimension should not exceed 20cm!!!)
Overall i would certainly recommend this bag if you aren't going to be taking huge amounts of kit.

I ordered this backpack after reading the reviews here, and it arrived the other day. The size of the backpack is what I expected. Putting it up next to my son's school backpack, it's pretty much the same size. For those not in the know, they'd be hard pressed to realize that you're carrying $$$ worth of camera gear. Nice.
I was able to fit the following with room to spare:
40D with 10-22 attached
Tamron 28-70
Canon 50mm
Canon 70-200 f4L (in the top section)
420EX flash
Dell Studio 15 laptop
There was plenty of room to spare in the top section and pockets for additional cards, charges, etc. I also threw in my Canon video camera into the bag without any issue.
The only downside is strapping on a tripod setup - my Manfrotto 055XPROB/488RC2 does "fit" on the side strap, but it's awkward. Obviously, the backpack wasn't designed to carry tripods.
Overall, I'm very happy with the pack. It's pretty damn heavy with everything stuffed inside, but that's to be expected. I'll use it as my carry on for travel and replace my Timbuk2 laptop bag. Only now I get to bring all my gear!

I think this sums up the advantages from my standpoint. It's the same size as a standard day pack and it doesn't stand out as carrying anything more than what would be in a day pack. The "efficiency" of the padding and protective features coupled with brilliant design makes this possible.
I agree that it falls short in carrying anything but the most compact tripods. Given the fact that I have a Slik Pro 614CF that fits perfectly, it's not a concern of mine. It would be a concern if I was carrying a larger tripod.

I recently bought the Kata DR 466, which is the same as the 465 and 467, but with a slightly smaller laptop compartment, and a more rounded top profile than the 467. It holds my XSi, 50 f/1.4, 18-55IS, 55-250IS, and my Speedlight 199A with room to spare.
Also, the laptop compartment is big enough to hold my 15" Macbook Pro with a little bit of work, but nothing that would ever concern me.
I am very pleased with this backpack, and just recently used it for a 300 mile motorcycle trip that I took my camera with me on. It held up perfectly to anything I could throw at it.

I like everything about it except for the fact that a camera with a battery grip completely overwhelms the bottom section. Still, I'm working on a way to pack it that makes it more useful to me. Will post if I come up with something.

I m in interested in 466/467 very much.nice 2 read those review.
glad that u all come out with the idea of no need worry about ppl stealing it in the crowd (carabiner)
there's not a complete separation between the upper compartment and the lower padded camera compartment.
This means that one cannot have for an example food or liquids without risking it (crumbles from a sandwich, etc) finding its way down into the camera department
do u guys come out an solution for tht?
johnz
19th of May 2009 (Tue), 09:21
I don't have a solution for that, except maybe you can put your lunch in plastic bag ?
Anyway, i am just curious, liquids aside, but what harm can a sandwich or a banana do to your camera, lenses etc.? Really? :) They are not that poorly built in my opinion..

yup ,wht u say are right.but liquid is my main concern here,as we may not bring sandwich around but we will definitely bring water during day trip.
may b the only choice is use a reliable water bottle. :p

I'm just curious as to why the DR-467 is the largest split-pack they make? I would think a couple larger sizes like the Tamrac Adventure 9 & 10 would be viable.
I own the massive HB-207, and it's great, but it's about four sizes larger than the 467 and is not split into two compartments (photo & carry-all).

There is a $15 rebate on this backpack right now. See the attached file for the rebate.
So going thru MSLCB with Adorama at 3% would put this bag at $62.55 delivered (plus tax where applicable).

Oh, how I love this bag! I went to see it in the pink and white version, fell in love with the bag, not the sticker price. And apparently this local camera shop is the only place near here that has it, but wants $40 more than my other local camera shop, or any online shop... It's crazy!!

Wanted to see what all I could fit in there.. And even though I'm a girl, I still had plenty of room left over. You're seeing my 20D, 135mm softfocus with hood, 55-250mm IS, and my canon rebel GII, along with my *lost charger* Olympus p&s. I was shooting with my 20D. I did put the 20D with the 18-55mm IS in there afterwards and had no problems. The laptop compartment has my acer (ugh, don't get me started), Understanding Exposure, and a notebook. The front top compartment has my wallet and checkbook, pens, 20D manual, dayplanner, lipgloss, cell phone, gum, raisins (for my kiddos) and cigarettes... There was still a ton of room :)

I have been looking at the Kata R-103 as a way of holding all my stuff.
Not as a quick access bag. Also, I don't carry a laptop.
Any comments comparing it to this one, or otherwise?
Tks.

Hey all, been looking at this bag for a while, and was kinda curious of thoughts on it fitting a 1D3 w/ 24-70 attached, 70-400, 430EX2 and either an UWA (17-40 or similar) or the 100 macro comfortably? or would it be kinda pushing it? or not at all?

Nate, I couldn't really fit my 40D with battery grip in the bag, and I'm guessing that the 1D Mk III is close to the same size. Unless you turn the thing sideways, but then you don't have room for much else in the bottom part. It's the reason I don't use the bag and still use the Tamrac Adventure 9, even though I would prefer to use a Kata.
Perhaps someone will disagree with me?

Thanks for the info, and ya the 1d is roughly the same size as a 40d w/ grip (might be a hair bigger, but useful for size comparison). Guess its back to hunting for a bag...
