has anyone experienced problems with the new r-strap thingy fastener from the bottom of the battery grip going loose and actually dropping your gear right smack against the concrete?

I haven't heard that yet but I have heard of people re-tightening! Close calls I guess you would call it.

Last I checked, they are now offering sort of a lock nut to keep it screw into the tripod mount/batt grip. From the site:
R-Strap Safety Precaution
To provide an extra measure of security we're now including a plastic sleeve to prevent the gate on the FastenR from opening accidentally. Please use the provided sleeve to insure a safe shoot when using our revolutionary camera strap. If you have any questions please contact us.

IIRC that's not for the bolt, it's to prevent the snap from accidentally opening.

Good call. Just figured that out after reading again.
But the picture of the bolt does seem to include a plastic lock nut.

I have the r strap and have used it for 3 weddings. I typically have two cameras on me at all times and really like the straps with neoprene and some cushion to them. I like the strap and use it with my Mark II and 70-200 2.8 so it is heavy--- If they would only make the strap with a little flex or cushion.

I use the R-Strap to shoot baseball for 5 weeks now. Carrying my 40D with 70-200 f/2.8 on it I have not had any issues with the nut loosening. I do check it regularly as I have heard of it going loose for others, but have not had any problems myself.

While we're on the subject, have many people been using a manfrotto quick release plate with d ring rather than the standard bolt? I saw that as an option on their site and been wondering how it compares.

I went to REI and bought some 2" wide strap (red was all they had:rolleyes:) but it was very tough. I added some of those things that attach it together but still make it adjustable, nit sure what they're called. Then add a plastic loop, a small carabiner rated @ 25lbs then put my Domke shoulder pad on it. Then I attach my camera w/ the RC2 QR plate.
Works like a champ, and it cost about $10 b/c I already had the shoulder pad and QR plates...I've used it w/ the mk III + 24-70 + 580EX and mk III + MP-E 65 + MT24EX. Hasn't failed yet, but I do check the QR plate often for wear/loosening.

hmmm....attaching a 580 ex to the mix and i am very very concerned that id actually snap my own flash head off since its dangling underneath the camera when i let go if it.
im also having a difficult time shooting in portrait mode, the fastener is in the way (using the battery grip that is)...

The other day when I was mounting my RC2 plate to my camera, the d-ring snapped right out. I thought of the r-strap when I did this. Personally I wouldn't trust it...

Same here it works fine..But I did have the r-strap open on me while I was wearing it. Lucky I was holding the camera. What I did was cut a longer plastic tube that it comes with to block the opening.

I have the DIY version, walked in the zoo for 4 hours with the 70-200 IS, no problem.
