Here's a couple pictures from my first attempts at long exposures. I had my old Digital Rebel with the kit lens and my XTi with the 50mm 1.8
I ended up needing the wide angle of the kit lens to capture what I wanted, so instead of fumbling around in the dark and switching the kit lens to the XTi, I just left it on the Digital Rebel.

Slight lightening done in Lightroom
This one below is SOOC, no editing. Anyone know what causes those rainbow halos? Is it using the kit lens? The old digital rebel? They're pretty neat, I like them...but was curious what caused them :)
