I purchased the 16gig iPhone the first of March and love mine! It has really been a great tool. I have even booked a wedding to a couple that were engaged---I showed them samples and forwarded links to my site while talking to them. They booked the next day. So it did pay for itself---but with the new one coming out---is there a reason to upgrade?

yeah .. the pictures shown on the iPhone is awesome and you just have to love the way you can " flip " through it
with the newer version that is coming out .. i am not sure if its a good idea ..
1. not hacked yet, ... no " installer " app
2. plastic compared to 1G metal housing
3. sturdy feel
but of course there are some cons to it .. but for people that already has the 1G, most of them are keeping theirs
as for me .. since i dont have one .. i'll most likely get the white one lol .. or take my wife's hand me down 1G

I have a 8Gb one and its great - an amazing mobile portfolio :)
I will have a look at the new 3G one to see if browsing is better/faster - as for the installer apps, the 2.0 software opens up the OS to the 3rd party developer community.
The Iphone 2.0 SDK has been taken up by loads of software developers with new native apps just around the corner.
2.0 software will be available to original Iphone users though.
3G and integral GPS are the big new selling points to me - plus the fact that the headphone socket is not recessed and also I've sliced my finger open on some metal bit on my phone.

I have one, and I love it!
I will not be upgrading, because mine is unlocked for use on T-mobile, and I think that the 3G networks are different for the two companies.
I am loving this phone, and it helps suppliment my POTN addiction.

I hate cell phones, only use mine in emergencies, and have an ipod classic that i love.
I will not be getting an iPhone as my mobile telephony needs are well met with my ancient Nokia, and my portable sound needs are well met by my iPod.
Quite apart from the fact that in the UK you can only have an iPhone on the 02 network, and i wouldn't use 02 if they were the last/ only cellular provider in the world, on account of their spectacularly poor customer service, and a particularly snotty little burst A-hole called Mark on their customer service team. With any luck he has been struck by lightning or disappeared under the wheels of a bus or eaten by the monster I put under his bed ( I have powerful daydreams....)....
But I'll still never go back to 02.

My Windows Mobile based phone does quite well. I've had it for almost 5 years now. I should look at a new one, but this one works great.
I looked at an iPhone but don't get how anyone can type on those things.

I actually love typeing on this thing, it takes a couple of days to get used to it, but once you are, it is great.
I hate the real keyboards on regular smart phones, they just drive me crazy. (even before I got the iPhone I hated them)

Hmm. An unlocked iPhone should work with any GSM carrier. I'm sure that I had a signal when I was in Heathrow last weekend, but I don't think it was O2 (unless they own other service providers).

Andrew, Andrew, Andrew... I'm going to have to work on you a little harder. :) I have a Mac for sale; why don't you step on over to the Dark Side?
Did you make the meeting Tuesday? I was sleeping by 6 pm. Still a bit jet-lagged and heading to Malaysia on Sunday. I'm going to be really screwed up.

HAH!
Yeah I was at the meeting, I was doing a presentation on HDR. You keep missing my presentations...what's up with that?
You gotta get some pictures up when you get back. I'm doing a Wedding Saturday here.

I was in Kenya last week and got back Monday. My sleep schedule is still screwed up and still taking the anti-malarial drug. I'm off Sunday for another week and a half trip. Bad timing on my part.
Good luck with the wedding - did you find you a second?

Thanks. No my normal assistant wasn't available. I'm not worried, done solo gigs before - I just like having extra hands to carry and hold things

I have iPhone 8GB with 1.1.3 OTB. I don't think I'll upgrade to the new one. My common use is the jailbroken apps & iPod usage through FM transmitter while driving. I have GPS built into my car which render the iPhone GPS useless. 3G?? I'm using the $5.99 t-zone for my internet access. T-Mobile's 3G would require the full internet package; thus not really attractive to me.
Also, if you're using AT&T, the 3G is capped. This is to extend the 5hrs battery life. Also GPS, 3G etc are sharing antennae. GPS may not be that good in such device.
If you want iPhone and can find 1st gen iPhone at significantly reduced price, I recommend getting those. Especially after the 3G iPhone is launched, there will be some overflow of the 1st Gen on eBay
just my 2c

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of hype and nonsense talked about this device. If Microsoft came out with a system for inputting text like the iPhone has, it would be slammed as "unintuitive" or "poorly designed". When Mac do it, people seem happy to invest the extra time to learn. The iPhone is a good device with some cool features but that is all. Some bits of it are bad and people should not be afraid to say so.
Mac are fixing some pretty glaring omissions in this new release like no 3G and no Exchange integration. The policy of locking it to specific networks has made it almost impossible to deploy in any large corporate environment and this is not yet being fully fixed.
As I said before, the iPhone is a good device but reading threads like this sometimes makes me fear that we are turning it into the emperors new clothes.

too bad its not on Verizon yet although I guess I can change networks now if I want.
My wife said I can't get a new iPod until I break the one I have now, but thats easy enough to take care of and this would be even cheaper than an iPod touch ;)

But you'd need 2 yr contract with AT&T and the $30 internet/month

The contract isn't a big deal. Its that $30 a month for the data that bothers me.

Well, MS didn't come up with it. They are least ingenious corporation. Their mantra has always been "let other companies do the R&D and then we'll buy the best ones. And if anyone gets in the way, we'll impose our anti-competitive practices upon them and squish them like bugs!" My principal attractions to the iPhone are the large touch screen (great for watching movies, even on a TV), showing off photos (on the touch screen or on a TV), sync'ing all my phone and email contacts, calendar, email accounts, etc., from my computer with virtually no effort. It's all about the system integration.

"Mac" is a computer. "Apple" is the company.
The iPhone is a good device with some cool features but that is all. Some bits of it are bad and people should not be afraid to say so.
No one has ever said it's perfect. But it is the best phone currently available for my needs (and about 10 million other people's).

You mean they're improving it after just a year? Wouldn't it be nice if other companies would be so responsive? The fact is, the first iteration was to get the phone out to the consumer base. They are now working on the business base. The beauty of the iPhone is that it runs OS X. It is a computer that happens to also be a phone.
The policy of locking it to specific networks has made it almost impossible to deploy in any large corporate environment and this is not yet being fully fixed.
I don't disagree with this, which is why mine is unlocked and jailbroken.

Sounds like someone has a little iPhone envy. :)

lol - you're a funny guy. I would not go near an iPhone with a 20 foot antiseptic barge pole plus, the older I get, the harder I seem to find it to jump on bandwagons. :-)

I have considered it. My friend does Video production and has demo reels on it. Also some on his website in a non public area. He obviously does not use it as a main promotion. But has gotten jobs from it while on the golf coarse, or meeting someone at a party. I will probably just go with the ipod touch though.
