I'm amazed that it was listed at $75. What an optimist.

Would make a good present for someone who likes to build models or do puzzles though.

I could use the body cap and a spare eyepiece for $2 and I'd pay the shipping!
What would ever possess someone to think they could break that camera down that far and ever think they could reassemble it back to working order?...outside of a Canon tech of course.

I have a lens run over by a bull dozer for sale.
It's a pancake lens now.

Assuming you don't break or scratch anything while stripping it down and remember where everything went, there's no reason an intelligent person couldn't pull something to pieces and put it back together again. Other than the shutter mechanism, the boards etc are no more complex than the inside of a laptop perhaps (and it looked like all he touched were the covers and boards, the shutter/mirror/sensor is all still in-place)
Fixing it if it was broken is a whole another issue though. Water damage sometimes goes away if you dry everything out sufficiently (and clean the salt etc off). But if some part got fried when it was turned on and got dropped, then its probably stuffed.

I see things sold for parts all the time. He said the price was negotiable, so he probably didn't expect to get the full price. If its just water damage then there might well be someone with a cracked 40D that really needs a piece of the body and could get a good camera working again for that price.

I've disassembled and successfully reassembled things far more complicated that a camera before, why would you think it couldn't be done? Ever seen the guts of an automatic transmission? As long as you keep track of how things look before disassembly it should be fine.

I have.
and it certainly helps that the smallest parts of an auto trans are about 10x bigger than the largest part of a camera

You would be surprised by modern transmissions - more electronics and stuff than you would expect.
Looks like a fun project... sort of...

I applaud you in that regard but me and my fat fingers could never reassemble that puzzle let alone remember precisely where every tiny screw and spring went.
I've done a few transmissions in my time, granted older pre 1980 automatics and manuals and I agree with bpurst4....

I'll fix the camera techs car while he fixes my camera!
