Hi,
Which filter do you suggest for Tamron 17-50? I would generally shoot my family pictures outdoors during vacation.
I am planning to visit Long Island beach in NY for the July 4th long weekend, just wondering what kind of filter helps getting nice pictures ..
I really don't know if i need any kind of filter?

If you don't know what kind of filter you need then you probably don't need one to be honest. Filters have specific purposes and using a filter for it's own sake is wasteful. Unfortunately no one has manufactured the "nice pictures" filter yet.

The first filter that goes on all of my lenses is a UV filter. Not because I need to block UV light but because it is the cheapest insurance for your camera. For a second filter I would buy a circular polarizer. This would be a good choice if the front of the lens doesn't rotate with focusing.
As far as the rest of the filters are concerned leave them at the store until you have some time to research their benefits. I would instead take your photographs and use pos processing software to simulate a filter.
my .02 cents

Is this good one to buy? - Tiffin (http://www.amazon.com/Tiffen-67CP-67mm-Circular-Polarizer/dp/B00004ZCFQ). I would like to stay under $50.

for that price, I'd say Quantaray (made by Cokin). Lately, Tiffen filters have a less than stellar reputation.
HOYA Pro or B+W if you wanna go all the way

For what you said you were shooting I wouldn't worry about any. But that is my opinion. Others like filters but I think that they are more often than not unnecessary. Unless of course you need to lengthen your shutter or you are shooting the surf and want some protection, etc.

do you recommend this? - Hoya Pro1 CPL (http://hvstar.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=657). someone somewhere recommended this site.

From what I've heard, HOYA Pro1's are pretty nice.
I would get a 77mm CPL and buy a 67to77 stepup ring (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/11687-REG/B_W_65069434_67mm_to_77mm_Step_Up.html) , that way you will be able to use this filter on any future lenses (and most L glass is of the 77mm variety).
I've used my 77mm B+W CPL (non-slim) with a B+W step-up on my Tam 17-50 without vignetting (no UV filter).
The only time I've had vignette issues was when I stacked my 10-22 + UV filter + CPL, subtract the UV and it works just fine.
