This one was a real PITA to PS out the rig. The car was filled with reflections of the pole, camera, and me...

Crap, there are trails of the rig all the way down the rear bumper.
Missed it.

Sure. I never understood what the whole big deal with these rigs was. It's not rocket science and nothing to hold in secret :D
Your wish has been granted :)

 I thought something was weird about the reflection on that rear shot! I can see you! bahaha
Anyhow, I think the 2nd one is the best angle so far.

Yeah, the third one was by far the hardest one to PS. There were tons of double-reflections from the rig, the camera, and me.

The car was filled with reflections of the pole, camera, and me... Yes, some forethought would make a better looking car. Find a spot where it looks good standing still & then do the rig shot there.

I wanted to try a new approach on this shoot and had to use the services of a friend of mine. Unfortunately, we were in his nest of the woods and I was unfamiliar with the local area. I had him pick a location for me off the top of his head. It had to be a shaded area (we were shooting noon high due to time restrictions), and with little or no traffic.
I'm still trying to think of a location that would allow me to hang a pole off my car and drive it... Most places that come to mind will most likely trigger too much attention, or worse - will win me an inquiring visit from the local PD...
Haven't given up yet though. :)

Idon't understand how some people think they can get in trouble from the PD for this... I mean, it's not a weapon! Or maybe that's what they think...???
Who knows. When I get all of my parts in, I will attempt this once and for all.

Very easy actually. If you are doing it in a public area (parking lot, street, what have you), someone can call the cops calming you are obstructing traffic with that damn pole hanging off to the side of your car. Not to mention, once the car starts moving, some people may consider it a hazard. I know I sure drew some gawks with that thing hanging off my car. :D

Blah blah blah people don't have anything better to do with their lives than to call the cops on harmless situations. I don't know about your area, but in my area (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale), they would love to just sit and watch. The only problem I have is really at major malls and their parking garages. Some of them let me do my thing and go on my marry way, but others come along with helmets astrapped on their head, riding Segways equipped with little LED "police" lights coming along saying to leave. Apparently they have something in the mall policy that people with nice cars cannot take pictures in a public parking garage. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you offer them 20 bucks to let you stay...

Thanks Vodka.
LOL, you are not really running after the car, as it only goes 1 or 2 mph for a couple of seconds.
For this shoot I used my friend as a driver. Yes, you could do it yourself, but it takes longer and it's a bit riskier: It takes longer because everytime you go sit in the car and shut the door, no matter how carefully you do it, the pole starts to bounce, and you end up waiting for a good 60 seconds or so until the pole stabilizies and you can start moving the car. Then also, as you let go off the brake, if you don't do it slowly and carefully, the pole starts to bounce beyond acceptable limits too. So I was spotting the pole and the camera and supporting both as the car was moving to control and stablize any vibrations. Doing it on your own, is also riskier because no one is next to the camera to spot it in case the pole gives way. I don't feel like losing the equipment just yet. ;)
The shots in the link bellow were taken by me while I was also behind the wheel. The car was on a slight decline, I turned the engine off, put it in neutral, slowloy let go off the brake and finally triggered the camera via a remote. :)

Very nice pictures.
Are you using the Adventura clamps from B&H?
Can you show us how you mounted the pole to the suction cups? And what are you using to mount the camera to the pole? Thank you!

The clamps I used are the Manfrotto Super Clamps (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546371-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_035_035_Super_Clamp_without.html)

Hey great rig shots. My only complaints would be the blown skies. See if you can find a building tall or big enough to cover the who screen while you shoot it. I know it's hard because you are using a wide angle lens but for me, if that doesnt work, I usually shoot right before the sun rise or right after it goes down. Keep up the good work.

How do you mount the super clams to the suctions cups?
Do you take the pictures upside down?

How do you mount the super clams to the suctions cups?
The Avenger F1000 cups have a rod/pin at the top, which fits into the Manfrotto Super Clamp socket. Nothing much to do there, just stick it and tighten the clamp.

Yup, here is the ballhead upside down. I snap the picture and then just rotate it in the RAW editor. :)

Does you camera bounce alot when you're slowly moving the car? What do you do to stabilize the bar?
CorzyPhoto
16th of June 2008 (Mon), 16:28
The suction cups stabilize the bar. The car is moving about 2-3 mph.
