Long story short: Way before I even got into photography (I was into filmmaking at the time) --when I was young and stupid -I sold a picture of Nick Lachey I took at a night club with my p&s, and sold it to the National Enquirer.

This was during his divorce with Jessica Simpson before it had become official. Two days after signing away the copy rights to the photo, Nick and Jessica made their divorce public. The following week, the photo made front page appearance in National Enquire, and 2nd page on Star Magazine.

This happened 3 years ago. Just out of fun, could anyone give me an accurate value of the photo with the info above?

I may disclose the amount I got if this thread doesn't turn into a flame war against paparazzis :p

Ps. I'm not a paparazzi!

I know the tabs pretty well. What was Nick doing at the club? Was he by
himself or with another girl? The price all depends on content of the
picture. A few years ago I was told that the Nat. Enq. was paying $650.00
for a cover, however let's say that Nick was kissing another girl that
picture could go for $10,000.00

I left that out --he was in between two girls :(
Your email did bring a huge amount of relief.
Friends and family were saying I could've made $80,000-$1000,000 for it.
They offered $500, which I negotiated up to $1,000.

Here's a the picture --small and useless... Nat. Enquirer can sue me :p

dude,

Depending on how they used it, cover, quarter page, ect. I would say
you did alright . You may have been able to get $1500.00.

It appeared at the very top right of the magazine --about 1 inch x 1.5 inch in size.

Then on page three, it was about half-page sized.

dude

If that is how they used it $1000.00 to $1500.00 would
be about right.

Out of idle curiousity, is Star magazine owned by or associated with National Enquirer?

National Enquirer owns the Star, Globe and the Sun along
with a few other magazines.

You said you signed away the copyright on the photo. That's not necessary for publication. You could have licensed it to them. If they have the copyright they were free to license it to other publications around the world, in which case they would have made more out of it than what it cost them.

With the tabs and most other magazines, when you make a deal with
them it's one tme first rghts. If they want to run the picture again in
a month or so they would pay you again but less money then first
useage.
