These pictures are from a rally held at Croft race circuit shortly after Xmas every year. Like every year it was cold, man was it cold, I am still not thawed out. Here are some samples and I will post some more later. I think Ian H has an interesting shot to post, as he was in the right place at the right time.

There is something that still stirs the rally driver in me every time I see one of these:

.

I like to take shots from way down low. This was taken 2ft from a very cold and muddy ground:
http://www.motorpix.co.uk/images35/cr-005.jpg
.

I took this shot, and others of the same car for a friend of mine:
http://www.motorpix.co.uk/images35/cr-001.jpg

And, a last one of the Metro:

.

I'll off now for more hot drinks, alchohol, a warm fire and hope that I feel less like an Antarctic explorer.

Were any of these shot with the 100-400?

Everything you see above was with my 300 2.8IS and 1.4TC, which is my favourite weapon of choice. I also used my 1D (original) with 70-200 2.8IS for close-up work. I finished the day in the rain with my MK-II, 85 1.8 and flash at the start of one of the late stages.

I did for the ones in shade by taking a WB shot and using it in C1 to set the WB when converting from RAW. For the rest, the light was changing so much I didn't bother.

Well if you've got some examples of the 100-400 at work i'd love to see 'em

Hi Ag, Well I'm old enough to remember when MG was a manufacturer, not just a brand stuck on something else. I used to watch these rally when they were factory supported. Ah, the good old days, or were they? Heaters in cars that never worked, everything an optional extra and they all came with free rust.

Here's another one of my way down low shots. Looks like he's about to run me down:

Nice Shot Ken, you forgot mention those kingpins that needed constant replacing.
All we need now is a shot of a Montego too!
First quick car I ever drove was a fairly sorted MG BGT about 3 months after passing my test, was a far cry from my 1.1 Fiesta, loved it.

Where are you metering off of?
I don't even have to tell you the shots look hot.

God this reminds me. I have some photo's from Dover Raceway in Jamaica from years ago(17yo or so), when I was a younger kid and was shooting around the track with my EOS ellan IIe.
I have to find those slides.

Happy to report both OK and managed to carry on with the rally. It was actually there first event after building the car and it was the driver's 25th birthday

Cheers

Great clear shots as usual, Kenny! :)

And a good capture Ian. Possibly why people race around with helmets?

Great shots Kenny & Ian - wish we had been able to make it - Ian you must have been standing on the inside curve of the complex before the hairpin - recognise the bank, often stand there.

Cheers

Superb shots Ian, and I bet you are pleased you got the MK-II. Ian was on the inside of the complex for that shot and I happened to be at the marshals post on the normal entry into the complex, on the inside, in the open, when that happened, so missed it. I was all over the complex area and couldn't find a warm spot apart from the marshals hut between Tower and the Esses. I hope its not colder for the Jack Frost rally Ian. :)

Same car as in Ian's shots, but an hour earlier when the only damage was from hitting some straw bails:
http://www.motorpix.co.uk/misc/MotorPix-035.jpg
.

The poor marshals spent all day putting heavy straw bails back in place after errant drivers kept hitting them. This particular bunch of marshals ended up with a huge collection of door mirrors:

Hi Ag, Well I'm old enough to remember when MG was a manufacturer, not just a brand stuck on something else.

Ahh.... but let us not forget that Morris Garages (MG) started off in 1922 or '23 as a brand name stuck on tweaked Morris cars... so has anything really changed? :p

Great shots, Kenny and Ian :)

Hi young man, how was the trip? Here was I thinking I would have this 3 month break but it appears the rally boys have different ideas. Off to another one in two weeks, so I'm getting my fix over the winter.

Ummm... the trip was dull and I may well be just as bad at seascapes as I am at landscapes. I will review the evidence and get back to you on that

Good stuff with the rallies (keeps you busy). I've got Pikey Central (otherwise known as the Autosport show - I'll take the 10D) in two weeks time plus a VSCC "Driving Tests" day at Brooklands. That should be good, I might be able to get some shots of some lovely old tin on the Members Banking... :)

I envy those in the parts of the world, and even around the US, that have races nearby regularly.

Especially rallys.

Great shots!

Hi Ian, ahh so I was right :), Ive just ordered a 70-200 f2.8 IS USM but it looks like a 300 f2.8 is going to have to be on the shoping list some time this year :)

Andy, It kept my head nice and warm on Tuesday. was more stylish than a bankrobber's ski mask or trainspotter's bobble hat and kept the sun out of my eyes. I have three I have bought in the States over the last few years.

Must have a word with Croft to install a hitching rail.

So this is where the car guys have been hiding?
I like the first shot, Ken. Reminds me of a navigator I once had - he didn't like to look up! ;-)
Nice sequence Ian!
