Just got the Canon 100mm USM Macro. To increase the magnification factor I'm considering buying a set of extension tubes to go with this and my longer focal length zooms (primarily for a closer fucussing distance) - Canon or Kenko?

Cheers,
Barry:)

They're optically the same ;{)#

Seriously, Canon has 12 mm and 25 mm. The Kenko set has 12, 20, and 36 so you get a greater range. But which combination of lengths will be more useful to you? I don't know that the electronics on an extension tube do any more than just pass the signal through between lens and body.

As Jon said they are opticaly the same as they don't have any glass in, so it will be down to which are most suitable and if the Kenko will work with your camera. I have a Jessops set wivh I got before getting my 10D. I have only used the one the the three tubes with my 90mm Tamron once, and that worked, mintained functions and so forth. Will need to try them more out soon. So you sould be ok with the Kenko set

In the end it will be down to personal preference, and which you think wich will suit you and what you do best. Hope this helps.

I've used all three on the Kenko tubes (and combinations of) with a Sigma 105mm macro on my 10D with no problems.

I went with the Kenkos as they are cheaper than the Canon ones and as glass isn't involved, there wasn't going to be an optical payoff. Example of all three stacked with the Sigma 105mm below, subject being a one pence piece.

100% Kenko!! Here is why. They work well and you get 3 sizes which can be stacked!! I love mine. Check out some of my macro stuff if you want here, most were with my 75-300 and all 3 tubes stacked:

A perfect example of needing all three... the picture of the holly bush with ice on it. Because the extension tubes limit the DOF to frame the shots like I wanted and get what I wanted in focus I had to keep switching tubes until I found a good combination. I would have been stuck if I only had a 25mm.

Have fun!!!
