...to make a full 360x360 degree panorama? In other words, capture all the surroundings and make it into one huge image? I am talking about including the ground too.
I have an idea to make a stand for my camera to accomplish this.

Check this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=485509) out. She does some really incredible stitching. Search the forum for her posts to see many others. Also take a look at her website.
Try googling "homemade pano head" or "diy pano". I recently saw a whole tutorial about making one using plywood and Home Depot type materials.

She is had made a QuickVR version of what I want to do. Now I want to attempt that someday LOL

Using PTAssembler: it will output a variety of TIFF files. there is a tutorial available at http://www.tawbaware.com/ptasmblr_tutorial.htm. I think the current price is $20 with unlimited upgrades
