I was hoping that someone having hands on experience with the Photek Illuminata II might offer up a capsule review. I'm intrigued by the internal reflective patch that supposedly reduces or eliminates hotspotting on the face of the box.
Comments on quality of light, number of stops of light it consumes, appearance of catchlights, difficulty of assembly, etc. would be much appreciated.
TIA

Hi Dave,
Looks like we're thinking the same thing. Right now I'm on the fence as to whether to get a Photoflex octabox or the Photek Illuminata. I've seen the Illuminata and from what I've read it's an excellent modifier and the round mask is quite nice. I can't find anything to indicate that one is easier or more convenient to set up or use.
I really want the Illuminata but the one thing I keep thinking about is the fact that it will not accommodate a grid, whereas the octabox will. The grid isn't the make or break but it is something to consider. Beyond that I don't see any reason not to get it.
It's not at the absolute top of my list so I'm not sure when I'll make that decision but it's not far off.
If you get one I'd love to hear your opinions and review.

Count me in, too! :D
(BTW Robert, what light modifiers do you currently use with your D-Lites? And Dave, any news on the Elinchrom 8-1/4" reflector and whether it will work with the Interfit barndoors?? (I'm catching up on my P.O.T.N. chores! :D)).

Hi Rudi,
I currently use the Q39 24" x 32" and 36" x 48" softboxes. I want to add a medium strip light and a 3 ft. and/or 5ft. Octabox, but the Illuminta's are looking very nice. Those darn grids keep nagging at me.
Also, I'm pretty sure (haven't done any testing yet) that the Lowel 7" barn doors will fit on the Elinchrom 7" grid reflector. I have that reflector and it's very nice with smooth transitions and no hot spots.

I haven't forgotten you , Rudi. I may be able to get myself down to B&H tomorrow morning. If there's one thing I want, it's a happy Aussie.
Best,

Well, I can heartily recommend the Octa Midi (53"), although I know that it's another $100 on top of the Illuminata. I love mine, but... no grids.

LOL, I appreciate that Dave, I really do! And BTW, I never thought that you'd forgotten. I just thought that since both you and Robert were in the same thread, I might as well kill two birds with the one stone, so to speak. :)
