View Full Version : Marking as Read and annoying pop-ups

Two questions...
My usual reading style is to open a forum, read a message, then scroll to the bottom and hit the "Go" button which brings me back to the main page of the same forum.
At work this procedure marks the message as Read (ie; it strips off the bold "unread message" font), while at home it doesn't. So at home, if it's the only message in the forum that means that I still have to click on the "Forum Tools" and "Mark This Forum Read"
It's just annoying that it works differently. I use FireFox in both locations. Is their any browser setting which might be different between the two machines?
Next, if you hover your mouse over a message a "pop-up" like a tool-tip will appear showing the first several words in the message. This pop-up tends to stay on the screen after clicking into a message. Anyone know a way to turn that pop-up off?

Do you have cookies turned off in preferences at home? If you do, the browser won't indicate where you have been.

I have to assume that cookies are enabled since I auto-login... But it might be something to check anyway. Strange though - it used to do this with PHPBB, too - fine at work, failed at home.

I am almost certain it has something to do with the cookie or how the browser handles the cookie.
I use IE and also read the forum at work and at home. What happens for me is following. Currently the cookie has me registered as last logged on at 03:45 PM and all posts before that time is marked as read, posts after is only marked read if I actually have read it. If I take a break for 30-60 minutes - I am not sure what the timeout is - then next time I am active the cookkie is reset with a new login time (even though I have never logged out) this also resets all status regarding read or not read topics.
In the morning I usually checks the forum before leaving for work but when I arrive at work the cookie has timed out and the last logon time is set to the last time I was active at home meaning that posts made before are marked as read after unread. and the same happens when I leave work and read the forum when back home.
I hope You understand what I mean

Well, Tommy, I have no idea what you mean, but I'll read it again....
OK, I understand it now, but it's not the same as what happenes to me.
Let's say that I see that a particular forum is bolded to indicate that it has unread messages. I go into the forum, and find a single unread message. I read that message, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Go" button. This brings me back to the main forum page.
At work, I would see all messages as having been read.
At home, I still see that one message as not being read.
It's a difference between my browsers I'm sure, because this will happen every single time. I will usually go into any particular forum a dozen+ times at work and everything works correctly. When I go home, even over a weekend, the messages never get marked as Read until I manually mark the entire forum as Read.
I may just copy over my entire cookies & ini file...

What happens if You refresh the page (F5 or CTRL-F5 in IE) ?

Nope, no difference here at home. And I checked my cookies and they look good to me. I have 8 cookies from photography-on-the.net and 8 from www.photography-on-the.net (they're the same names).
Very weird. Annoying and weird...
