Is the flash head tilted, or the wide panel pulled out?

Have you tried rubbing the contacts with a soft cloth, like a lens cloth? Rub both the contacts on the camera hot shoe and the contact pins on the flash. Of course try fully charged batteries in the flash.

I've heard of either the shoe on the camera being ever so slightly loose or the foot of the flash also being slightly loose which could cause the contacts to become slightly separated, especially when camera and flash are rotated to portrait position.

There are some excellent flash gurus around here. Be patient...some others should be around to help troubleshoot some more.

ahhh...yes Renee in his post was asking that. 580 ex II will report lens focal length when flash head is tilted at 90 deg. and the next click forward which I think tilts the head another 7 deg. further down to assist in close distance macro shots.
Glad you figured it out!
