i just ordered a cactus like trigger & receiver for $21 shipped (https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13089) to go with my 430ex. Do i need any thing else to trigger the flash off camera?
I already have a couple of stands... what will i need to mount the receivers to the stands

That receiver has a 1/4-20 thread at the bottom. If you can mount that to your stands, then you don't anything else for bare flash off camera. However, most people use a umbrella bracket to hold the receiver to the light stand.

And mounting a flash on that receiver, both on an umbrella adapter (swivel bracket) is where it all starts to get mechanically precarious and that initially attractive hotshoe start to look less appealing.
This newer model seems to have eliminate the PC connector, so that hotsoe is now it.

If you're not planning on using an umbrella or a softbox, all you need is the flash with the trigger and the little hot shoe stand that came with your flash. For convenience sake, most people use a stand for the flash/trigger, so there's no need to find something to set your flash and trigger down onto.
If you want to use an umbrella along with your trigger/flash, you need to get the umbrella bracket. I got a few brackets on ebay for like $5 a piece that weren't all that bad, and a few cheap shoot-through umbrellas for like $9 a piece. Shipping wasn't bad because it was all from same seller.

i'll mos def need the stands just so i don't have to search for stuff to hold the flash. i'm not sure if i'm going the umbrella route yet. i'm not doing portraits so the harsh flash isn't a issue right now. a diffuser could work for me if needed
