Is there any way to tell how many images were taken on a previously
used G9? My wife and I picked one up today that looks nearly spotless,
but the first image from the SD card came back out as img_5569.cr2

I was wondering if there was a hardware counter mode I could look at
that would tell me if this is just a continuation from one of our previous SD
cards, or if the other owner had a field day... ?

No user accessable shutter count. If you use a card which has a higher image and folder number than the camera has known, it will use the higher number from the disk to start counting its images. It will always use the higher number, either from the disk or last known from camera.

I started a thread a week or so ago to ask the question "Is it possible to speify the starting point (or current numbering point)?"

Got a great answer:

That doesn't help with your original question about true shutter count, but it's interesting info if you ever need to change the sequence.
