I can't really speak to the Canon lens, but I have heard mixed comments here about it. I have the Tamron... It was one of the first lenses I bought after spending a ton of money on the 10D. I think it's a great lens for the price. I get great pictures, it's fairly compact and lightweight and very inexpensive. It is pretty much an outdsoor lens... you will need to have decent light and the focusing is slow and not nearly as quiet as USM lenses. All in all, if you're looking for an outdoor telezoom on a tight budget, I would recommend it. Let me know if you would like links to photos.

You can either send a moderator a PM requesting the move, or wait for one to stumble across it like I did.

No problem.....it happens a lot.;)

I've got the Canon 75-300 IS and I enjoy using it. Admittedly, it's not the sharpest of lenses but I've got some good pics with it, especially if it's stopped down. In sharpness, I'd say it's worse than my 28-135 walkaround lens. Of course, I'd love to have this lens (http://www.jessops.com/search/viewproduct.cfm?PRODUCT=CANEF7030045DOUI&BRAND=CAN&CONTINUE=false&FEATS=&FIRSTPRICE=&KEYWORD=&LEVEL=&MODELNUMBER=&NEWQUERY=True&NODE=0&NODE_PATH=0&ORD=ASC&ORDERBY=&QUANTITY=10&RECENT=0&REFINE=&SEARCH_FOR=canon%20DO&SEARCHNODE=0&SEARCHURL=dointellisearch.cfm&SECONDPRICE=&SHOWCASEID=&STARTROW=1&SUBS=&WORD_SEARCH=Y&) but it's out of my reach at the mo.

What is your budget price?
Maybe you can spring for the 70-200 f4 and a 1.4x converter.
You won't be disapointed with that lens.

I've used those lenses but my tamron was abit of a dud so i'll have to give an opinion based on images other owners have shown.
The 75-300 image stabilized lens is (sadly) just an optically average lens with the IS feature added.
The tamron you are interested in is also an optically cheap lens and would be about the same as the basic (non IS) 75-300

Really it would come down more to subtleties than any overall 'better or worse'
The tamron-like so many kit lenses-has strong colour and contrast with so-so sharpness.

The canon 75-300's are rare (for a cheap modern zoom) in that they have realistic colour and contrast.sharpness is similar to the tamron .

The IS feature on the canon is usefull in more than the obvious way-it often allows smaller apertures which give better sharpness.I really don't think it's worth the huge price premium over the standard 75-300 though.I have one currently and will sell it soon and either go back to the very good canon 100-300/4.5-5.6 or step up to a genuine stunner of a lens ,the 70-200/4L!

As far as I know the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro should be a lot better optically than both of these lenses (and somewhere in the middle in terms of pricing...), alhtough it seems to be a bit slower in AF than the Canon lens...

I have the Canon 75-300 IS and it seems to be a good lens. I've only been using it for a couple of weeks though.
