We've all seen them, so post your "What were the owners thinking" images. I saw these at the Eastpoint Gratiot Cruise last weekend.

1. Look at the wheels! And I used to think the ones on the "A-Team" van were ridiculous!

2. He calls it "Carputer!" Just think about all the money he saves on paint & wax?

1. Miniature wheels...definitely not what most go for.
2. Erm...I wonder how many times he get kicked in the nuts
Why though, asking for all sorts of things like rust stains from the chips...obviously not meant to be outside lets alone stuck to a car

I have to agree. Being a Lowrider my self this is what i do and what a majority of my photos are all about. Just like the Muscle cars, the Hot Rodders, and the Antique collecters Lowriders have earned their right in the world.

Sorry I have to cutoff......I'm actually leaving a Car Show Picnic and getting ready to board a bus, so i hope to view other comments and add a little more to my own.

i fail to understand how lowriders with hydralics falls into this category. I wouldn't put them here, as a group. But tiny wheels on a big car both look wrong, & aren't all that safe, either. What if you have to duck some kid on a bike sometime?

Both the school bus and the Isetta were taken at Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada. There are quite a few 'oddities' like these that show up there. I'm planning on going this year, and I hope the cost of gas doesn't keep a lot of people away. It's amazingly fun, especially for us old farts who grew up with hot rods.

It's a LOT cheaper than $5,700 (before tax) for ONE Brodix cylinder head for a big-block Chevy, though! :D

The 13" wheels and (usually) 175/50-13s are for clearance with the hybraulics. Can't believe that people put little 175s on, commonly, Cadillac Fleetwoods with the hydraulics (or '64 Impalas); the car weighs 4000lb.

I have a lot of respect for the lowriders. The cars are not made to be ducking out of the way of little kids of bikes, they are made for taking roads low and slow. So I can't respect someone who has no respect for someone else's hard work and money they put into their car. Oh yea those wheels are safe by the way.

To each their own.

Lowriders are okay for parking lot jumping contests (or whatever they're called), but they have no business being driven in traffic with real cars.

I do admire good workmanship, no matter what kind of car you're talking about. I have seen some beautifully turned-out lowriders.

Having posted that, IF you/they were to learn the handling capabilities of jacked suspensions & tiny wheels, & stayed within them, as in keep it down to 20mph in some cases & never go on a freeway, then I have no problem with them.

Even the guys with the great Pro Street cars with the tiny front wheels have to drive them with a grain of sense?

BTR_FTW

I respect the work that goes into low riders.

assuming they arent jumping around on public roads they arent any less safe then people that chose to run inappropriately sized tires on a given rim.

example...

I've also seen several muscle cars running wider tires then they should on a given setup.

Aesthetically, I don't much care what people do to their cars. I have no right to tell another person what his car should look like.

Having said that......when people decide to take their cars out on public roads and into traffic with other people, they should be able to start, stop, and turn like everyone else. When a car has been modified in such a way that it impeds traffic, or puts people in other cars at risk, then it's a menace, and should never be taken out of a parking lot.

Many (granted, not all) lowriders are dangerous by nature of their design. They lack adequate ground clearance for the normal irregularities found on most city streets, and their small tire patch renders them unable to stop in short distances. Compliant suspension, which is essential for maintaining control of a car at speed, is virtually non-existent.

I will admit......being able to jack the car up and dangle an itsy bitsy front tire in the air is a pretty neat trick. Convince me that the car is improved in some useful way with that ability, and I might even become a big fan.

Disgusting re-work. The front end is horribly replicated; the kidney grills are horribly replicated. The "2 door 5 series coupe" look is not working at all. It's a cry to be accepted and a failure of attempting to stand out and be original .. owners like these detroy our scene with obsessive, over the top modifications; looks more like a chop-shop special to me; all looks and no go. Take it to the track and I'm positive all the work done on it will be ultimately regretted.

Sorry for the vent, but the work done on this car is outrageous.

looks like you are refering to streched tires like euro/drift cars choose sometimes. These tires are usually wider than factory, not narrower, and a slightly streched tire removes that sidewall flex which can cause a sudden slide out of the tires, it gives a more linear trackion curve (not better, just more linear)

sure its just for looks, but its predictiable as hell...if a guy bought a VW that came with 185's on it and he puts streched 245's I wouldn't call that unsafe at all...

just my opinion.

Back in my Porsche Club days, the 914 was generally ignored unless it was the 914-6. Those cars were capable of being turned into genuine hotrods. It was popular to have the wheel wells flared in the style of the 930 Turbo. I'm not sure what you'd call these, but you could be right about the high school project. A serious Porsche lover would have handled the styling quite a bit differently.

A Photoshopped image of an actual car sold at the Auburn Classic car auction about 20 years ago. I'm not sure if it could be driven both ways or not but apparantly it could as it had two steering wheels and headlamps and (added) taillamps at both ends.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3186/2860955135_3fbc96b77a_o.jpgThe NHRA pro stockers run the Cavalier and now the Cobalt because of the small frontal cross section. Pulling the fronts that high wastes enough that isn't necessary since he probably doesn't get to those speeds. He could have slacked up on the bars though.

I'll dig and see what I can find.

To be honest I was talking with the guys before they made their runs, the high pulls were strictly to show off. The event was a local Chevy event and it was pure fun factor. They were running low 10 second 1/4 mile times though.

Believe it or not this is a standard production bike (except for the Corbin seat) What were Honda thinking of when they put this concept bike in to production, I big risk on their part I think as the market for this type of machine must be limited.

They were running low 10 second 1/4 mile times though.Thats a superstock car and its not showing off they all leave with the wheels that high, some have different setups that let them leave a little lower but a majority leave just like that. It's one of the most fun classes to shoot, especially when you get into the hemi ss/a cuda's and darts.

I agree 100%. What should be banned from the highways are those jacked up 4WD trucks that have never been within 50 miles of a dirt road...

why?

people have their own taste and choose to spend their money on trucks, just like you spend your money on camera gear.

as long as it isn't unsafe and about to fall apart, i don't see anything wrong with it.

Actually "Mag Wheels" came from the days when they were actually magnesium. Many were five spoke but many were not. :)

As for that thing on the front of the Ram I was thinking it was some kind of work platform but it looks much too nice and clean to have been used much.
