Hey guys, I'm having trouble enabling my S45 to direct printing on a Epson PictureMate. The directions says its as simple as plugging the camera into the Exif (USB) port and the camera/printer will do the rest. But no matter what I do I can't get the printer and S45 to go into direct print mode. ???? I have firmware 1.0.0.0 do I need a newer firmware??

Also, when I use the print order feature the photos are properly recognized and print as I have indicated.

Just finished updating to firmware 1.0.2.0 - No change. I can't get the S45 into direct print mode.

Sorry, I've no answer to your question. But I'm wondering... The PictureMate is so easy to use with a memory card... Why bother trying to hook up the camera?

Yes the memory card feature of the Picturemate is easy to use. But since the printer does not have a LCD, the only way to view photos is to use the camera. Also, within the camera some basic editing can be done. Lastly, I don't want to print every photo on the memory card so I have to use the print order (DPOF) feature and designate which photos to print or do it directly from the camera.

I've also connacted Canon directly. They advised to put the camera into PTP communication mode (menu, middle tab, last feature in the list). But when I did that the camera would boot-up through the normal process and then show the last picture taken for about 5-7 seconds anf then go to a black screen and change the green LED to an amber color. After the camera goes black the only thing that it will respond to is to shut-down.

Has anyone succesfully printed directly using a Canon S45 with firmware 1.0.2.0 ???

You can have the printer make a numbered proof sheet (index print) first. Then, instead of printing all the photos on the card, you check (on the printer's menu) the numbers of the prints you want off the proof sheet, and it prints only those.

I've also used the DPOF feature with my 10D--it's great. Printing of the card let's you keep shooting with the camera, too.

The problem with the index files is that my memory card contains 200-450 pictures at a time. I have a 1,024 MB card and don't always download photos. Maybe once or twice a month I download the photos and do the printing/back-ups. So how many index prints would 300 photos generate?

But what gets me mad is Canon advertises the fact the S45 is direct print capable, and yes they have foot notes stating the function will work most of the time but not all of the time. Basically, Canon is lazy and doesn't want to release firmware updates to fix issues as they become apparent.

Okay--now I see why you want to do what you want to do. That would be one heck of an index print! Maybe one of the problems with the direct print option is that the card is so big--or so full. It is lame that Canon say it will work sometimes but not all the time. In my book, that means it doesn't really work! You could still try the DPOF route--although with that many photos on the card, it might get time consuming...

I tried using the 32 MB card that orginally came with the camera I had two pictures on it. Still the same issues. Thanks for tring Steven.

I'm still wondering if anyone had success with the direct print, regardless of the printer?

Finally got to the bottom of my problem. Apperantly, the Canon S45 is not PictBridge compatable. The Canon S50 (with firmware 2.0.0.0), S60, and S70 are PictBridge capable cameras.
