Hi all,

I managed to organize track access to photograph a local motorcycle race meet from within the fence, and on the inside of the track . Was excellent fun!

Below is one of the shots of the historic bikes (actually a shot of my father). I have a few questions some of the more experienced folk may be able to help with.

1/500 f/5 ISO100 Canon 400D 75-300 kit-zoom (non-usm)
(most of the day I was using ISO200 f/11 ish however)

a) generically, any tips to make my shots better?

b) looking at the 100% crops, are they soft, OOF, motion blur, or something else ? Or is that as good as can be expected from fast moving bikes ? (I realise that my lens is rubbish for this kind of photography, but its all I have at the moment)
I ask becuase 90% of the other shots are considerably worse than this one, they have that same 'blur', im not sure what the 'easiest' way to solve or fix the problem is

c) Is it simply the position I was taking photos from that cause the dark areas on the riders ? Would a CPL help ? (i have one on order, but it didn't get here in time) I was shooting JPEG and think perhaps the in-camera contrast was set way too high (+2 on top of the 'Standard')
