Slideshow while tethered shooting?

I'm trying to get a set up where I'm shooting tethered, then as pictures are being downloaded to the laptop using EOS Capture, a program will be continuously displaying the images in a slideshow, including the newly shot images.

I've tried using Picasa, Irfanview, and the Windows picture screen saver and they all run into the same problem: it seems when the slideshow is first run, it gets a list of all the pictures presently in the folder. Then, it simply plays through those and loops, ignoring any images that are being added by EOS Capture. If I just stop the slideshow and restart it, it now includes the newly shot photo. But, I'm looking for a way to avoid that extra step. Any one have any ideas? :)

Unfortunately, once the slideshow starts running it will not refresh the directory listing so it will only cycle through the images that were in the folder when you began the slideshow. I don't know of a way to have it refresh on the fly and then add the new images to the slideshow.

As I was sitting here waiting for responses, I tried playing around with macros (in my case, AutoHotKey). One solution I found was to use the Windows screen saver and then every minute, have the mouse move (stopping the screen saver) and immediately click the "Preview" button in the properties windows for the Windows screen saver (re-starting the screen saver). That little blip between stopping and starting the screen saver is a little choppy, but still, it accomplishes what I was looking for. I just thought I'd share that little bit with anyone else trying the same thing. If someone thinks of a more elegant solution though, I'd still love to hear it! :)

Can I ask why you want to be able to do this? Is this for a client or just something you want to do?

Well, I'm getting married this coming Saturday, and I thought it'd be fun to put together a simple photo booth for friends and family to use. I figured it would be good to have the display hooked up to a TV so that the people can see themselves immediately after taking a shot. Then, I'd also like to have whats already been taken playing on a laptop in slideshow mode so that those outside can see what's been taken and hopefully be inspired to also try some shots!

I'm still testing things out, but its looking like this should be able to work :)

I know that it's too late for your wedding, but I'm trying to do the same exact thing. Tried Windows, picasa etc as well.

So far, the best software solution I've found is gPhotoshow.

My setup:

- Canon 350D tethered to a Laptop, with canon EOS capture running to save the files to a designated folder.

- gphotoshow running and taking photos from the same folder that EOS capture saves to. You can play around with the settings in gphotoshow, but the most important one is in the Advanced Settings tab, second to the last item: At the end of the show, rebuilds the full file list.

I have a wired remote to trip the camera, and a bounced strobe provides lighting. I still need to add an external monitor, but other than that I like this setup. There is one weird thing I've noticed - It works like a charm if I shoot without a CF card, but if I have a CF card in the 350D, the file that gets sent to the laptop sometimes gets corrupted. My wedding is in October, so I have sometime to refine this setup.

I am looking to do the same thing! One problem though. The programs you listed ar only Windows based. Does anyone know of any Mac compatible programs that have the same capabilities. Thank you!!!

Anyone know if this worked out? I am trying to do something very similar. Run a slide show and be able to continusouly update the pictures without interruption. I probably won't shoot tethered, probably just upload the photos to the computer then add them to a file. Of course, it'll be with a dual monitor set-up.
