My lens says 58 on in if I want a rubber hood or UV filter is that the size I need to get?

Yes. And if you are talikng about your IS kit lens I know 58mm fits because I have one that I use filters on.

If you are referring to your kit lens then it takes a 58mm filter. The only stupid questions are the ones that go unasked. Welcome to the forum.
