Ok so a fellow photographer and I met up in manhattan yesterday at BnH. I had to buy her 550ex from her, and she was getting a 580. Anyway, this is NOT flash talk.. lol..
So I saw the Nikon D70 in the store, and I walk over and pick it up. Immediatley I sware this thing is a brigin big Tonka plastic toy. It feel bulky, It feels practically unreal, and the menu screan is junky and full of these Cartoony colors. I was really not impressed, because when I pressed the shutter button the focus was really slow compared to what I have noticed with the USM Canon lens'.
My hand also never felt comfortable, the Zoom was really sticky also. I was just utterly turned off by the camera. D70 owners must not shoot much because I know I wouldn't.
On the other hand, I picked up a Minolta 7 which focused way quicker, I don't think as quick as my 20D.. But it was faster.

I held a Nikon D70 and it felt weird..........a bit more boxy...........guess I'm just used to the rounded feel of the Canon cameras..............

I haven't picked one up yet, but when I had my 10D, I picked up a Digital Rebel with the kit lens in the local Best Buy's store. It didn't feel very substantial either - kind-of toyish. After some thought, I realized that the Rebel was as capable as my 10D at taking great images. I also like a substantial, solid-feeling camera like the 20D, 10D, or 1-series. And, given the choice, I'll always pursue a Mag-alloy body. But I can't discount the Digital Rebel that I handled in the store, nor can I discount the N**** D-70 as both are very capable of taking great images.

A few months ago on a trip to Northern California, a tourist asked me if I'd take a picture of him and his group, as he handed me his D70. I only had it in my hands long enough to take three or four pictures, but I was actually a little impressed with it. Not enough to dump my 10D and 20D for it, of course :D, but it ain't a bad piece of equipment.

"Nikon don't do bad - they just don't do good as well as Canon". Or something like that... :)

That has got to be the worst review I've ever heard about the D70. What did you shoot with before your 20D?

My boss brought his D70 into work the other day so I had a quick play. In terms of look and feel it was OK. It doesn't compare well with my 10D or 1DMkII but for a consumer level dSLR it was fine.

ever had a Drebel with kitlens in your hand? it's the same plastic toy feel!
but some people like it and some don't!
i for instance like the weight of the 10D D30 etc
but other people like the lightweight Drebel (when there are no big lenses on it ofcourse;) )

I hope you washed your hands before picking your 20D up again ;)

Every camera seems to have a unique 'feel' to it, and it is rare that a strange camera would ever feel familiar or comfortable the first time you hold it.
That's as far as I'm willing to go in defense of Nikon.
I think the thing that bugs me most about the D70 (and other Nikons) is the hokey color accents they seem determined to put on them. What's that all about?

Hey, I wouldn't mind having an aqua-green accent stripe on my 1DmkII! On second thought, maybe a red one would be better to match the neck strap that came with it. ;) ;)

I used to own D70 and I thought it was built nicely, it didn't feel like toy to me. I just didn't not like the Nikon CCD sensor to Canon CMOS sensor. It's the wingnut behind the VF who brings the camera to life.

It wasn't a review , it was an opinion...
There is a difference.

Yes sir, I held the Drebel that same day. It felt a like it had to much plastic also.
special note: I am not commenting on these camera's ability to take photos. I know they can output some great images.

I personally don't like how the 20D feels, in terms of shape and design its the same as the 10D, but the size and weight makes it feel like a big P&S.........not my cup o' tea.
As for the Nikon, I don't mind the feel of the Nikon, but it does not feel as wide as the Canon, atleast from what I remeber. I am with Belmondo on one thing, they use some tacky colors. That red-orangy crap is awful.
Then again, I don't think the 1D II is neither too big nor too heavy.

I was just sorta surprised to read what you posted. I've read a lot of things people do not like about other camera's, Nikon especially. But after reading your post it sounded more like "hate" toward a very good camera. It threw me.
If I had the choice to buy another camera between the Rebel, D70 and the D20, the D20 would win hands down but when I purchased my Drebel the other option was the D70. If I knew then what I knew now, I would have bought the D70.

Yeah I was just being honest about my impressions of the camera. I just didn't like the 1st or second impression that I got from the camera. I am not taking a stab at Nikon products, nor saying that they can't take decent photos.. I have seen the images the camera takes and they are great. I just gave my opinon on how it felt.
I do see where you are coming from.

No problem.
I held the 1Ds in my hands, and fired off a few shots.
I had to run out the store, before my credit card got HOT.
LOL
That camera is awesome.
