Wait until you see a fancy flash, it makes the 430 looks a little basic :p All flashes do the same thing, put out light, the difference is in how easy it makes it, and additional features like wireless stuff.

Your basic flash is built into your 40D and pops up when you press the little button.

Oh, yeah! It's a capable little flash. I have one and a friend borrowed it. I don't know if I'll get it back! :(

But the 430 will be just great for what you do. Just read the manual, then read it again.
