I have got an xti, 430ex, an old Canon 177a speedlite, and two very weak cheapo flashes. I have been trying to get a decent portrait setup going to no avail...

My current setup is the 430ex shot as a main through an umbrella and the 177a shot through a scrim as my fill. The other two lights I am trying to use as a hair light and background light, all off camera.

My problem is balancing the intensities of the lights... I can obviously dial down the output of the 430ex, but the other flashes only fire full power in manual mode.

Does anybody have any tips or techniques for using such old equipment (other than the xti and 430) to balance the light better? I have been trying self portraits like crazy but am getting nowhere through trial and error.

The easiest way to do that is by using a flash meter. Since you can't adjust the power level of the other flashes, you'll need to use distance, a light modifier, and/or a neutral density filter to control the flash output.
