View Full Version : POLL: Your next Canon Camera

mattograph
17th of June 2008 (Tue), 21:56
Given the following:

1) A 12 month prior period (give or take) with FIVE exciting new bodies introduced by Canon;

2) An 8 month coming period with 2-4 NEW potential cameras coming our way;

3) Some super hot rebates;

4) and too many "I am gonna buy this camera" next threads to count --

I thought I would throw up a poll.

Please comment or opine on your next, exciting, Canon camera purchase!

i voted 1DsmkIII but to be honest, it all depends on what canon does with the next 5D whatever it is. if they do come up with a new 5D with digic 3 and all the new 40D features and maybe a few more, i will probably buy this one and use it along side my mkIII. if they don't come out with something nice soon, i will likely pick up a 1DsmkIII because i am now doing about 80% portraits work and only 20% wildlife...

For my next camera, I was actually thinking about a used 1DmkII, but that wasn't an option. So, I had to go with 40D.

I put the 50D (based on the assumption that it's going to be an upgrade along the xxD line after the 40D) because now that I have a FF body, the 5D I just need a simple sports camera to complement with a reasonable frame rate. The 40D's 6.5 fps isn't a huge leap in my opinion from the loaned 30D that I upgraded to, I'm hoping the 50D can go a bit faster before I buy a crop body.

Either the 5D Mk II, or a 50D.
I just bought a 40D, and plan to have it for at least a year or two before thinking about upgrading.
I voted for the 5D Mk II

50D would suit me as long as I can get a body for $1200 or so. I think I've got plenty of time before a 50D comes out but I wouldn't upgrade until that release.

I see I'm in good company with the 5D II. I took the 40D for the frame rate and IQ but was looking at the 5D's. Some good glass is on my list while I wait for the new model.

I bought the 40D as an upgrade from the XTi, and have been very happy with it. A 50D would need some dramatic changes to tempt me even a little bit, but a good full-frame 5D successor would certainly have me contemplating how and when I could afford it.

brecklundin

in the ten years I expect to get from this camera, my new 40D, who knows what I might want, if anything. As long as mine is still taking solid pictures I see no reason to change. Just regular service, cleaning and such should keep everything tip-top for a long time to come.

Voted XSI, I have a 40D but the wife and daughter want there own XSI. They say the 40D is too big and heavy for them to carry all day. Besides my daughter says she can out shoot me with even a lesser camera. :o

The 1D Mark 101 - it'll feature 100mp CMOS, full frame, ISO 25 - ISO 102400, 5" LCD screen, shoot 50fps, unlimited RAW buffer, perfect metering™, in built flash, full weather sealing, will be housed in a mini tank body. Or maybe a mini hummer. It'll have secret rays that can make models gorgeous, sexy and smile. Same secret rays will make birds freeze in mid air for perfect in flight shots. Digic 101 will allow instant processing of images in camera, so they are perfect. Noise will NOT exist at all, even at ISO 102400! 100% viewfinder. It'll have 200 cross type AF sensors that focus down to f11 on both horizontal and vertical sections and they'll be eye controlled.

I've voted for the 5D Mk II (or any other name the evolution of the 5D will have).
I've now a XTi and I want a good (and durable) update of my camera, so I suppose I'll upgrate to this body. 1D Mk III is too expensive, and 40D not as good as a 5D.

If I update my body, I want something durable (that I don't need to change soon for specs reasons...).

I was a bit quick off the mark and didn't look at all the options. I am saving so I can buy outright my xxD upgrade. So, i checked the 40D box. But as I intend saving for a year ish, the 50D may be out then, so that should have been my selection.

I am loving my 5D, 40D combo. But I am looking for a camera close to the D3 without paying that much and a Canon so I can enjoy my lenses. If Canon comes through, I'm saving up! I love the 1 Series, but just can see to spend that kind of money.

I’d spend the money for a series-1 camera if it weren’t so dang huge. I am not a fan of big cameras and if Canon would come up with a series-1 camera in a package like the 40D or 5D, I’d drop coin for one in a second.

As much as I would love a 1Ds MkIII, I can't justify spending $8k on a body. 1DsII is a possibility, but depending on the offering of the 5D replacement, I would probably be more inclined to purchase that.

If the 5D Mk II is weather sealed, isn't vastly more expensive than the 5D was at launch and doesn't suffer from some kind of nasty bug then I'm probably going to get one. I love my 40D but I'm tired of having to hide it from rain. If the 5D Mk II isn't weather sealed enough to cope with at least a quick shower then it's a 1D of some kind for me.

Colorblinded
18th of June 2008 (Wed), 15:15
A 1Ds MK II gets a lot of things right for me, but it doesn't benefit from the newer sensor technology. So it's going to be a 5D Mark II for me most likely as a 1D Mark III isn't an upgrade for me really over my 1D Mark II and I don't have the money to burn or really want a 1Ds Mark III right now.

A slightly more compact camera to compliment my Mark II would also be a nice thing... so still hoping on a significantly improved 5D Mark II. I'd still like to see 1 series build, sealing and interface on it though.

5.2D, if it ever exists, if it doesn't lack some deal-breaker features, if/can afford it. I won't be upgrading from the 30D until there is a FF camera that suits; APS-C is a purely an economy measure for me - forced by circumstance - i.e. I'm broke.

If there's a 3D or 7D - that might be worth a look too.

5D II, when it is out for about a year, to get any bugs ironed out :D.
I recently got a 5D, at the current price it is a very good deal, and considering the problems with my 40D in combination with a 85L, my 40D's AF and exposure problems, next time I buy a new body I will wait until all potential bugs are fixed, rather than buy it within two weeks of availability :D.

I voted to switch to Nikon.

I may well end up doing it, too, if the 40D I ordered shows the much complained about "soft focus" problem.

The main reason I went for Canon last year was that, based on reviews, it was on par with Nikon IQ wise, but seemed to offer a much wider choice of lenses due to internal focusing motor.

What I found since, though, is that this "just as good" IQ doesn't seem to apply to "dummy" modes such as Auto. In full auto, my father-in-law's D40 beats the living crap out of XTi, hands down, especially as far as exposure and accurate focusing go.

I found that in many cases, I simply don't have the time to play with exposure compensation, flash exposure compensation, post processing etc. E.g. at a birthday party for little kids, full of once-a-lifetime moments, my "keeper shots" rate was about 50% while my in-law's was almost 100% - at least image quality wise, if not composition. Moreover, I don't have time or inclination to post process several dozen photos that I need to print & give to parents. In situations like these I want to point and shoot - while still being able to use more advanced features when time is right. I think Canon falls flat on their face in this respect. Sorry for venting.

Never had that problem with my 40D, but it did seem to exhibit more noise than my old Rebel. It has since had a sensor clean... and whilst that shouldn't make any difference... the pictures from it are now crisp and clean. :)

I voted 5D MkII. Always wanted a 5D, but at the time I could not afford one, now with the Mk II reasonably imminent, I'm in a better position and also content to wait having the 40D to keep me happy in the interim. :cool:

I'll buy the 5D MKII if it costs $2500 or less.
