I would suspect you're not the only one who does this, but perhaps the only one to admit it! haha... What did you use for the shot?

Nice photo, and I wouldn't really call it cheeting!

I am positive I am not, many board members have been there I am assured. The sun was great for most of the afternoon, so it was worth the trip. Only problem was he wouldn't stop screeching or bouncing around..Eagles are loud I have learned.

Only 15 days and I'll be there again!
How are the Wolf Brothers doing? They must miss me by now...

Nice shot on the eagle. He can be very tough to expose correctly. My last trip was full of unsuitable headshots of this guy.

For most people, a zoo is the only answer. It may make the shot possible, but still probably not easy.
I know that my animal shots (mostly in the wild) just don't compare with what I see here, in terms of quality. Still, I'm happy with them as most people rarely get to see a wolf, or fox, or bear, or moose, or eagle in the wild. Since I'm retired and travel so much, I have those opportunities...for which I'm grateful.

Man, oh, man! Here you go, giving away our little secret! Now I'll have to go find that elusive Montreal kangaroo just to prove to people that I ain't a cheat!

LOL

Nice shot, btw, especially with the blue sky in the background. :)

Nice wolf picture, too. 70-200?

oops, I'll keep my mouth shut next time. ;) My girlfriend's brother lives right next door, so it's an easy 1 min walk up the road.

Actually, all the pics were shot with a 50mm 1.8. Spent the morning out with Ian hunting deer with his 100-400 however (thanks!). They didn't turn out so well, as I have an issue with shakey hands. The low light and 400mm lens weren't helping much in getting the shutter speeds up to combat it either.

Nice shots all :D

I've a question though. Why do they call them ecomuseums ? Are they actually different from zoos ?

In the UK we have "zoos" or if they specialise in a genus/species, they are called "centres", e.g. "Bird of Prey Centre".

Just curious.

Cheers

Ian

I'm sure one of the Canadians can come up with a more specific answer but I looked up the words in my online dictionary and came up with these defintions that might help explain.

Eco- : habitat or environment

Museum: an institution devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value; also : a place where objects are exhibited

No clue, usually they are just called zoos.

The ecomuseum most of us go to is a non-profit organization, linked to a major environmental/ecological centered research university here in Montreal. I am pretty sure it is a proper name; as in "The Ecomuseum".

Oh and because all posts without images are pointless...

Ah thanks guys.

Having had a quick trawl around websites for ecomuseums, it does look like they are zoos but with much more emphasis placed on each animal having a habitat more suited to them and space for them to roam a bit more. Would that be a fair description ?

Cheers

Ian

P.S. Nearly forgot to add an image:

I still shoot at zoo's, err, that is, take captive animal images while at the zoo. Although it seems I have been very fortunate, since in one day I ran across every animal listed above within an 18 mile stretch of road. Sure, it was the Northwest corner of Montana, and I was on a backcountry forest service road, but they were all there. The moose at mile 8.9, a blackbear at 14, the elk at 18 and then the rest while coming back out. Less than three miles from the main road was where I came across a mother grizzly (sow) and her cubs. Since then the mother was killed, and the cubs have been adopted by the San Francisco zoo.

Anyway, sorry to digress. The photo's above are excellent...

Not at Rigaud with Ian at the wheel. It just doesn't happen. Kangaroos, maybe. Deer, no.

well see, the last few visits, I have also believed that this was the case. I figured hey, i got up and had a coffee, so what the hell. This time however, the deer were everywhere. Fairly close as well, although a few were extremely nervous.

edit: Whoa..nice eagle. I tried to get that exposure and couldn't. Lots of details lost in shadows in mine, I will see what I can do about it in PS tho.

One of the deer that ignored the aztec curse...

Geez, a guy takes a little break and his secret deer spot goes out the window:):)
Haven't gotten around to processing the shots from the ride around Deer Mountain but the deer were there. One field just off the South side had 22 deer browsing in it. Scott and Leo will remember the road that leads to a dead end and a couple of new homes built on the side of the mountain. Darn deer were all over that stretch. I've made them promise me that they will be out and about Jan 15th.
The Eco Museum was founded as a non-profit center for birds and animals that were injured and after recovery could not be released into their natural habitat and survive. The Museum now accepts wild animals and birds that people tried to keep as pets and realized that it was not the smartest thing to do. There are a lot of wild ducks that drop in in the spring and fall as well as many species of justabirds. There are also wild whitetail deer that live next door in the Morgan Arboretum.
There is one guest that showed up one day and never left. Tofu (American Crow) kept hanging around and landing on folks heads. He is a big suck and does a fair rendition of "Merry Christmas". He now resides in a new enclosure and entertains visitors.
Scott, I'll make sure the window is open to the "boys".

Turbowolf, I'd say you were very fortunate to see all those animals in one day, all close together. But, NW Montana is one place it can happen. BC, Yukon and Alaska are also good places.

All posted photos are fantastic.

I wish that place was close to me! I'd love to visit. Great shot of the eagle, too. I've actually seen a couple bald eagles in the wild, but one time I didn't have a camera with me, and the other time I only had a p&s with a wimpy zoom lens that couldn't handle the job.

Great shot! I'm leaving next Fri on a field trip... hope to get a sighting and a good shot or two.
