I use JAlbum for my event gallery, at http://www.pixf.com/events/
I've been very happy with it, though I'm starting to outgrow it with the number of photos in it (some 13K or so)

I took a skin and modified it to match my color scheme, add the purchasing stuff, and various other things to customize it. I can't remember which one I started with, sorry.

Most of my 'old' albums are done using Jalbum, http://pics.webbitpro.co.uk/
It's a great piece of software that creates good, easy to use, but functional albums, however I stopped using it when I found php gallery2 as now I just upload the photos and the rest is done server-side, compared to sometimes having to leave jalbum for an hour or so to process and upload an album...

For the styling it is the css files, but to add content to the pages you need to modify their "htt" (html template) files.

I've never tried JAlbum, but I noticed password protected galleries on some of the sites above. Is that a feature within JAlbum, password protected galleries?

It's a feature of some skins.

Mine - www.walkerc.co.uk
I have been testing a new skin on www.walkerphoto.co.uk but I'm not satisfied with it yet. I am very html iliterate so struggling to get the headers and footers sorted.

I've been using Jalbum for a couple of years now, and grow more impressed with it as I develop better understanding of its customisation options, and as it gets enhanced too. It's now a very powerful and professional product.
And it's free - but if you like it as much as I do, you'll want to send the developers a few $$$ to say thanks.
I use the 'Chameleon' skin.
