Just 3 of my most recent candids of my girls playing in the living room. The only light source is the 420EX bounced straight up with cathedral-type 15ft. ceiling.

#2 is pretty darn good. I'd say that your flash has plenty of "umph" taking on those 15' ceilings!
Well done.

Thanks for all the compliments. The 420EX has more "umph" than I think people give it credit for sometimes. Not that I wouldn't mind a 550 or 580 to go with it. These shots only had the FEC at about half-strength.

Nice girls - nice photos!

I generally don't like black and white photos:( and would be interested to see colour versions of you B&W shots.

I have just ordered a 420EX flashgun to partner my 300D/Digital Rebel and I'm encouraged to see that your bounce flash was so successful, even with a very high ceiling, as this is one of my main purposes in buying this flashgun.

colliewalker,
...you don't like B&W photos???? I would be very happy to share some color shots with you, but I am also very interested in your reasons for disliking B&W. I think it's fascinating. B&W can often give a true picture of the way light hits a scene and how the scene deals with that light. ...and the fact that there are literally limitless possibilities for converting color to B&W in digitial...its so interesting to me. ....not to say that I don't love color...I do. But sometimes, colors, hues and saturations just distract from the "pure-ness" and the lines of an image.

...that being said, I do think that B&W is overdone and too often people just always convert to grayscale and call that a B&W conversion. I don't like the idea of converting to B&W any photo that doesn't "make the cut" as a color image either. A B&W photo 'usually' is already B&W in my mind before I even release the shutter.

...anyway, just my thoughts. I'm very interested in hearing why you 'don't' like B&W generally. I'll try to find some color images in this same -high-ceiling- room with the bounced 420 and post them here shortly.

thanks,
daniel

Daniel they are so cute and your photographs are beautiful. From the mom of 4 nearly grown girls, remember to treasure every day with them, time flies so fast.

Here's another one in color under the same conditions. Now, I did make curves & levels adjustments to this, but the lighting is still pretty even and soft, I think. The white balance is not quite right, but you get the idea of what the flash did.
