When talking with the Canon reps, they always make the point that DPP is the only way to process RAW files. Lots of the users here also seem to agree that it is a better convertor. Since Canon are not ever going to be the provider of a wide range of software tools and they aren't giving their conversion details to Adobe, is there the possibility downstream that DPP could be changed to a plug-in for Lightroom/Photoshop? It would be nice to have the ability to have the option in the workflow without having to go to a totally different application?
Is this realistic or just a crazy thought?

I don't know. Having DPP as a full plugin might be hard, but I've seen DxO make a plugin for Lightroom.

personally I don't see the economic imperative for either party to do so.

I know what you mean but we do seem to have a lot of folks here that rate DPP's conversion and both Canon and Nikon refuse to assist Adobe with ACR. If they are keeping something special in their conversion, it would be more convenient to have it in a larger workflow. Nikon obviously charge for their software anyway but since Canon give theirs away, wouldn't a plug-in be a small step further?
