Long story short, I had a tif. file too big for my computer to handle saving to a jpg. So, I saved it to a gif. file.
Can a gif. file be saved as a jpg? I am having trouble with this on my computer. My computer isn't the best in the world for delaing with larger files, but It gives me trouble when trying to save a 400kb gif. file to a jpg. But, I can save the same gif. file back to a tif. file
you might need more info?

Wow! How big was the tiff file?
Are you sure there wasn't some other reason it wouldn't save as a jpeg, like bit depth or layers?

Why was the tif file too big, and how did it show the problem?
If it simply wouldn't give jpg as an option under 'save as' or whatever, it is possible that the problem was that it wasn't reduced to an 8-bit file. A 16 or 32 bit tif cannot be saved as a jpeg, but simply dropping it to 8-bit allows you to do what you want.
No idea about converting gif to jpg I'm afraid, but I hope the above helps.

Umm, 400k anything being too big for your computer to handle? You can get a solid desktop from a few of the big retailers for under $800, including a monitor. I would really urge you to upgrade!

PEBKAC. We have to work out the problem. Make sure it's RGB, sRgb color profile, 8 bit, then save as jpg.

File is 900mb TIF. RGB/16 file (I opened a 30"x30" file). I then "save for web". Doesn't work with a "not enough memory" box showing. I figured that because of my computer. SO, I save it to GIF. file. It saves to a 806kb(not 400 like I thought) Gif. file.
I want to change it to a JPG file now. I try to "save for web" and I get the "not enough memory" box again.

First off: Using gif (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF) is not a good idea IMO. 256 colors isn't all that much ;)
Gif won't support layers or 16bpc, so I think that was not the problem.
If the gif is 400kB however, I'd say the tiff wasn't that large to begin with either...
Edit: Ah. that explains.
Use "save as" instead of "save for web".
If that won't work, flatten first.

Yes, probably best to do it manually in this case. First, reduce to 8bit. Second, resize to desired size. Third, save.

"save as" won't give me a JPG option.
GIF was ok for this picture. it was a logo, so I only used few colors

"Save as" will give you a jpg option if the file is 8bpc...
Should have stated that correct in my first post...
If you make a logo with only a few colors, why use 16bpc in the first place???

Have you reduced from 16bit to 8bit? And flattened any layers?

I started the file at 16 becuase I wasn't sure what I was going to end up with.
In the tif file, I grouped layers togethor for file size. I didnt change anything else manually when saving to gif.

You've been given the solution about five times so far. Listen to what people here are telling you. JPGs can only be 8 bit, convert to 8bbp first.

Also, if you saved the image as a gif file, it's now Indexed color.
You'll be able to save as a tiff, but not as jpg.
Go Image > Mode > RGB.
The "original" tif you should be able to save as jpg just fine by now.

haha, no I got. I figured it out last night. I understood what Tim and everyone was saying but I wasn't sure how to change it on PS.
Rene Damkot's last post is the way. I never mess with "mode" in PS, so I was just searching through all the options until i figured it out.
