View Full Version : Is this chromatic aberrations? I think it is but I can't seem to remove it...

I just got back for a trip to take picts of Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ. Great place, but I am seeing A LOT of what I would consider chromatic aberrations on the edges of high/low contrast areas. I have tried the following techniques to fix the obvious defect, but none seem to be able to remove it.

1. I shot in RAW and tried fixing it in Adobe Camera Raw. Result: No effect
2. Opened In Photoshop and tried "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer. Result: Altered too many other colors in the image.
3. Opened in Photoshop and tried to "Replace the color" Result: Also altered too many of the other colors in the image.
4. Tried "Heal" the edge with the Healing brush. Result: look unnatural and fake.
5. Tried to create a mask and "Heal" it again. Resulte: Again looked unnatural.

Here is a 100% crop of one of my images. In this crop I have done nothing to correct the problem. Notice how the edge is almost duplicated with an obvious color shift between the edge and rock.

Here is the complete image with the red box showing what part I cropped above.

Here are the specs for the original image:
Shot using a Canon 20D 16-36mm USM 2.8 L
F22
6 second exposure
ISO 100

Is this an example of true chromatic aberrations? I've see it before, but never had this much trouble correcting it. Please help. This is driving me CRAZY!!!

Yes but you'll never see that in a print. PS has a CA tool that should be able to fix that.

Actually I am seeing this at output. I'm using WHCC and wanted to print this at 20x24. They suggested I crop it to the size I want but do not alter the DPI. Then check the resulting dpi. If it is at least 100dpi, then their output device should be able to make the file print okay and it did. The file looked GREAT except for these edges.

I should have also mentioned that I also tried using the Lens Correction filter located under Filter -> Distort -> Lens Correction. This cool little feature appears to have the same CA correction settings as ARC, but it still had little to no effect on my problem.

Does it mostly just appear at the edges that are brightest?

Does it mostly just appear at the edges that are brightest?

Yes. That's why I was thinking it was CA.

If it's not all over I would just clone it out. Someone who is better at CA may have better advise. But if you get rid of the white line between the rock and the CA I doubt you would be able to see it. You can do a test print at 100% on 4x6 paper to check it.

Yeah, cloning was my thought too. I tried that but was not happy with the results. I suspect the bad results of my cloning more due to my Photoshop skills than anything else. lol

Well, I decided to try another round of tests and here is a side by side comparison.

This is before.

This is after I did some cloning followed up with a little of the healing brush.

What do y'all think? The edges seem a little ragged, but I do not think it'll show on output. :)

I wouldn't complain about that. Have walmart print a 100% to double check it.

I agree. I am not too concerned about the ragged edges as there is always a little softening that happens when printing.

By the way, I use whcc (White House Custom Colour), not Wal-mart for my output house. Wal-Mart is evil

I'm just talking about printing a crop of the area to make sure it looks OK before you spend the money on another 20x24. I wouldn't expect you to print you wall hanging copy at walmart, walgreens, sams club etc.
