View Full Version : Getting into off camera flash

I may be dense, but I am just not grasping the stuff I've been reading.

I have a 40d and a 430ex. I would love to use a flash off camera, but budget is a big concern. I am wanting to know what I need to get started and I just can't seem to get my head around it. I am very visual and reading things sometimes doesn't click for me. (That's what happens when you go 7.5 years without a good night of sleep.)

Can someone tell me exactly what I would need? This wouldn't be for professional use and i don't need anything fancy. I'm thinking I'd like to have 2 flashes, esp for using outdoors. Would I be better off getting 2 sunpak flashes (or similar) and selling the 430ex?

I also have a 40D and a 430EX. I went with one of them wireless setups on ebay from hong kong for 20 bucks shipped, works good for me. The pic below was taken with this setup. I have fun with it

i'm in the same boat. i went with the $20 hong kong trigger a receiver... read up on catus trriggers....

i was also considering selling my 430 to buy 2 sunpaks but decided not to becuz i need the recharge rate on the 430ex. so i'm just going to wait until the price drops on the 430ex since the 430ex II is coming out and i'll just scrape up some more $ to get another 430ex at a lower price

So, with my 430ex, to start I would need these:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=89982&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

And probably a stand of some sort. That would get me started??

Nope you don't need them If you Decide to go with the Catus/HongKong Trigger set up i mentioned above for $20 .... you just need something to mount your flash & receiver to. if you have your stand that comes with the 430 you can start as soon as u get the trigger & receiver... i"ve been messing with mine with nothing but my camera, my flash and what came with my in the box of my trigger & reciever

And contrary to the post above mine, you do need some way to trigger the off-camera flash. And if you don't have another flash with Canon wireless master capability (550EX, 580EX, 580EX II), then you need the hotshoe adapter and PC cord, or a hotshoe adapter and radio triggering system.

Well, that would depend what type of radio trigger the OP gets. Not all triggers come with a hotshoe adapter to connect the flash to the receiver. ;)

my bad i should have been a lil more spacific... his last post was after my post about the Hong Kong triggers so i assumed he was asking what else he needed with that set up to get going......

Hi,
I have a Canon 30D and a 430ex. I wanted to be able to do off-camera flash in the cheapest way. I purchased a few items from www.flashzebra.com (pc cord, pc to hot shoe adapter, and a swivel bracket [this is for attaching the flash to a lightstand/umbrella]). This has been a very reliable and cheap solution for me.

A couple examples of my first time with setup:

hope helps.

I just bought these and they are VERY very nice.

I also bought two PW and the hot shoe adaptor to fire off one 580EXII and have the 2nd 580exII set as slave...you also need some weight to get the stands in place. I am going to get sandbags that can be filled with sand(dirt) or water.
