Just got my SD300 and when i on/off, focusing and zoom in/out, there is this funny noise that's quite annoying. Sounds like something is grinding. If you operate the camera is a quiet enviroment, you will hear this sound. Is this normal? Or is my camera faulty? Do you guys face this problem?

Sounds like something is grinding...

Hello raodrider,
I just got my SD300 as well and there is a low whirring sound when the zoom extends out and is pulled back in. At the end of that process (either extend or retract), there is a sort of clicking which could also be described as a "grinding" sound. The sounds are also there when I focus or turn the camera on so, I believe these are the same sounds you are referring to. Personally, I think this is nothing to worry about and is perfectly normal. For some of the compact cameras I have seen, the SD300 is rather on the quiet side. To be safe however, I would go to a Best Buy or other dealer and try another SD300 as I'm not 100% sure if it is the same sound that you are referring to. We could try to keep in touch through this forum and exchange notes on this camera as it really appears to be a beauty.

Good Luck!

Good Luck!I hv own other compact cameras as well but they sure don't sounds like this. Initially I thought my SD300 was faulty, but went to another camera shop to test out the demo and new unit, same thing. Seems like the sound is normal. Anwyay, I'm sure a Made in Japan camera would hv to pass thru strict QC test and hope this is nothing serious. Btw I'm impressed with the picture quality and the shutter lag. Better than my previous cams. Battery life could be better though.

Hi all,

It seems like this sound is normal. Hv been to a couple of shops to test out different units, all hv this sound. If you do a search at camera forums, you will see other ppl ask the same question too. I'm sure this is normal and nothing wrong with the camera. No regrets getting this little gem.. :D

I just got a PowerShot A75 (christmas gift) and it has started making a similar noise when zooming in & out - a sort of whirring/clicking noise before and after the zoom adjusts. I wouldn't think anything of it, except that it only started making this sound a couple of days ago.

If anyone can tell me:
- is it going to get any worse?
- should I have it repaired/replaced?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, especially since I am considering buying another as a gift.

The noise is the camera focussing. It's normal and I wouldn't class it as annoying.

Mind you, if they had figured out a way for it to focus silently, they probably would have enabled dynamic auto-focussing during the recording of movies. I believe one of the reasons they lock the focus after the first frame is because otherwise the microphone would pick up the constant noise of the focus mechanism.
