Using Smugmug

Do any of you guys use smugmug? Is it worth trying to get into to sell images or is there a better place?

I use smugmug, but I am not pro - it just serves as a place to archive / share photos for me. The folks at Smugmug have always been very helpful. Plus they gave me a nifty camera strap!

I saw that there is an option for people to pay for prints and personal/commercial licensing of your images. I was just wondering if it would be worthwhile, or if there is a better place.

P.S. Smugmug, if you read this: I'm still waiting for my strap!

I use SmugMug for my business site and Pbase for my personal site. I have no problems with either site.

I also use Smugmug for personal use. I like it for the fact you can keep it as simple or make it as complex as you want. Since I have family scattered up and down the East Coast, it is great that can order the photos they want online.

I am also waiting on my strap!:)

Smugmug is awesome. And I got my strap a long time ago. ;)

It is definitely worth using this site to sell prints. But don't think that you can just post them and people will come. You still have to drive people to the site. They will not just go onto smugmug, search for something and then purchase it from you. I have sold some but it was a targeted gallery where I had customers before the gallery was even created.

If you are serious about creating web traffic and selling prints then you may be happier with a custom built site. Spend some time in the galleries and business forums.

I have had the same experience with my Smugmug gallery. I have had a pro account with them for a year, and I couldn't be happier. When it was time to renew, there was never a question.

However, I too shoot for targeted audiences, and I haven't yet sold to anyone who just happened to "find" me.

And yes - I love my camera strap :lol:
