My primary type of photos are event documentation. While shooting a workshop, I normally shoot candids of the participants at work. But sometimes, the subject sees you. Then suddenly pulls the people around him/her for a group pose. This really distracts me as I'm now shooting from single person to group, from portrait to landscape orientation. And sometimes, you have a long lens on, it just ain't gonna happen. What do you do when this happens?

Just laugh, pretend to take the shot they want, delete/ignore the crap shot and carry on as before. The chances are you'll get the shot you want simply by circulating for a while and coming back again.

You mean they do things like break into a Captain Morgan pose when you are trying to get pictures of them working?

I usually just take the picture, and wait 30 seconds for them to forget about me so that I can get back to what I was doing.

I know EXACTLY what you mean :) I usually have my 70-200 on for this type of stuff, so if they want a group shot, I have to move WAY back.....

Maybe I should use my 100-400, then I can stand far enough back for the candids that they won't even see me

Hahaha. Nice one stocky.

Well, if I just take a shot, the next thing they want is to chimp! oh man.
