Today Canon extended the rebate campaign on the 40d in Japan until August 3rd. About USD $100 cash back on 40d, about $200 cash back on 40d with ef-s 17-85mm.

The rebate has been running since March, but it just hit me... at current exchange rate, and using the cheapest online price I can find in Japan, that puts the 40d price at USD $761.

The 450d runs about $588 USD in Japan.

The 1000d will be in stock on June 27 for $576 at cheapest online price.

So why not just get a 40d? Or why on earth would someone buy a 1000d at just a few pennies less than a 450d. Strange... but I do enjoy the price war that is developing. Thank you Nikon!

Cheaper in Japan than in the US? That's new.

Wow! I need to start being a late adopter I think. That's a great price.

Actually, it's pretty common for Canon bodies to be a tad less expensive in Japan, even with the current weak US dollar/exchange rate used to compare. It's lenses that tend to cost a lot more in Japan than the US. And... the faster/better the lens, the bigger the price difference.

And then for some reason focus screens are more than 1/3 cheaper in Japan. Yet other accessories can be much more expensive. It's quite difficult to keep track of.

Not that I know of, and the roughly $100 cash back might be a mail in rebate for Japan anyway. I did not read the details. Anyway, here is the website I pulled the prices from listing a bunch of retailers http://kakaku.com/item/00490111089/

And if you happen to travel to Tokyo, I recommend Map camera in Shinjuku. http://www.mapcamera.com/
