awesome! i don't see how you got so close and got him still long enough to get that sharp of an image. my mantis won't stay still for a shot like that.

I was wondering the same thing. It could be that those lenses are shaped differently, aimed different, maybe for close up work? :)

It's a male mantis shrimp. Peacock mantis to be exact.

I currently have him in a 10 gallon saltwater tank with about 10lbs of live rock. This shot was taken through the aquarium glass (which was thoroughly cleaned), clean water conditions, and with all filters/pumps shut off. Flash was used.

Very sharp work on this one. When I had my Reef Tanks(2-210gallons) once in a while they would hike in with the new live rock I added. mine had the club appendages. Fast, cunning and lethal when they were hungry, but beautiful and very graceful in their own way.

That's actually how I stumbled upon a mantis shrimp. One hitch hiked over in my my 14g nano reef tank. At night i would hear popping noises coming from the tank. As you stated that was their club like appendages cracking through hermit crab and snail shells.

So i set one of those traps and caught it.

The one i caught turned out to be too skittish and would never come out. I read that the peacock mantis was a better "pet" and more personality. Ordered one online, and now i have two,

So what do you feed him? Or just take him to the grocery, drop him in the lobster tank on the way in then pull him out when your ready to leave? :)

lol
He eats snails, hermit crabs, tiny clams, raw fish, pellets on occasion. They prefer to crack open their meals. Amazing to watch the speed and power they can generate with their appendages.
