View Full Version : Sunset over Balboa Harbor

Everyone else is posting sunset shots, so I think I will too. Here in the Los Angeles area, we have gotten "record breaking" rain for a few days. There was a break in it last night, and I went walking around Balboa Island. I happened to be on a bridge over one of the canals leading to the harbor as the sun was setting. This is pretty much out of the camera. A bit of white balance and a small nudge in brightness is about it. Overall I like it, but I am concerned that it is just too dark. Any thoughts?

Oh, come on. I know that Zero Responses usually means a mundane shot, but is this shot SO BORING that it fell all the way off the front page without anyone saying anything?

I know that I am the worst assessor of my own work. And maybe it isn't "Cover of the Rolling Stone" quality, but I did think it was interesting that the rays of sunset were confined to such a narrow beam.

Anyway - I rarely bump my own posts, so indulge me. For those of you who looked and yawned, please let me know why it did so nothing. Even a few people saying "What a P.O.S." would have made me happy.

I don't know, Rad. Normally, I really like sunsets over marinas, and this one has some very nice color in the narrow area of light. I think it comes off as "un-spectacular" because the area of bright light is so small in comparison to the darker area.

Rad, Even I missed this one otherwise I would have commented - I like it but I have to agree with Sparkler, it is a little too dark - there is a lot, possibly too much going on in the harbour and my eye is searching out the detail and I want to see it.

I took the liberty of doing a little contrast masking on it (hope you don't mind) and here's the result:

Also, try the PS action you told me about "Midnight Sepia" gives a very pleasing effect to the image though be it, it also darkens it down again.

Way to go, Meerkat! It brings out lots of detail without going overboard and a much larger area of the picture has good color.
