Where do you get $14,000 at 17? Even with a job...
Anyways, I haven't added up the damage yet but I will have to do it as soon as my shipment from B&H arrives. I'll need it for insurance purposes. Though I would imagine it's quite a bit.

So far after a little over two years I'm proud to say I've made nearly 1% return on my investment.....Although I look at it as a work in progress,
   I know the feeling! Every piece of equipment I own has been purchased in the last two years, and I'm probably about even with you regarding the return on my "investment." Before that I had a Rebel and a 420EX.
But as far as making my money back with it, I've never been able to understand why some people seem to think I (we) need to earn a return on it. I could have easily spent more than that on something like a boat and I'll bet not a single person would ask me how much money I've been able to make with that. In fact, a boat would just continue to cost "boatloads" of money when using it which is what you would have to do to justify owning it. And I'm going to guess the people who can make their money back (or any money for that matter) with a boat are few and far between.
Everybody should have a hobby. Mine is a kind of expensive hobby to invest in (the way I choose to do it anyway), but after the initial investment, participation is virtually free. And it comes with the added benefit that occasionally I can actually make money with it. How many hobbies/obsessions can say that?

Since Mid May of 2007, I have purchased a tad under $18,000 worth of gear. :( I have not even made a dent in that, in return investment from shooting yet. Money is starting to come in, but Summer is usually pretty slow for me :( Luckily, I have sold quite a bit of my gear, that I used till I upgraded, so I have made about 50% of that $18,000 investment back from gear sold. :)

Found some killer deals on older manual focus film equipment thru the years. When I sold it I actually made money to use towards the digital stuff. i.e., bought a mint/new Canon FD 200mm Macro lens for 80.00 and sold it for 375.00. It would take me far to long to research exactly what my out-of-pocket expense is becasue I would have to go back years and years.

Sorry but I dont know at this time. I was only concerned what my premiums would be. I am going to get back with my agent next week to get covered. I am going to go with renters insurance AND with the camera/lens coverage.
Just call your auto insurance agent up and see what he can insure your camera/lenses for. Insurance companies insure anything, not just cars.

It's a tough question to answer when you add up all the periphials; i.e. computer, monitor, printer, gear bags, paper, inks, memory, etc.
I guess what it took me to make an 8 X10 print... 10 to 12K or so. Guess I should have stuck with film; it was much cheaper!

I did it similarly. I raised about $15K on eBay selling stuff around the house. Since most people pay with Paypal, my Paypal account was HUGE. I ended up spending about $7K on camera gear at B&H, who take Paypal (everything in my sig)! Just under $8,000 and proud to say, not a single credit card used.
Pretty much all of mine except a 17-40 was on a credit card...with 6-24 months no interest financing. Never paid a penny in interest. Thank you to all you deadbeats paying interest and allowing the CC bank to offer such a great service!!!:D:)

Just a tad over $15,000. It's a good thing I bought a lot of this stuff used otherwise I'd be closer to $17k
For the tiny difference, I'd go new. But, I lease two new cars every two years, so what do I know. (never paid a penny in tires, repairs, out of warranty!)

I'm a firm believer in not counting how much all equipment has costed me. That stems from my film days too. It's better not to know the amount. :)
Your insurance agent will thank you.
 Now you got me thinking about insurance. I should thank you for reminding me I guess ;). I will have to insure my equipment in the coming months. I do keep records/receipts. I've heard it's worth it and the price isn't all that much.
Whenever these type of threads come up in automotive forums, photo gear forums, etc I always thought it was taboo to a$k or an$wer this question.
Funnie, I haven't paid (out of my pocket) for a single one of my digital bodies or current lenses. All have been gifts or work expenses. The 50L will be coming outta my pocket.

300D kit $1000
20D body $1250
50mm 1.8 $85
28mm 2.8 $170
28-135 w/hood $430
Tamron 28-75 $370
Sigma 70-200 $750
Sigma 10-20 $450
Extension tubes $90
550EX $325
500DG super $210
Vivitars $200
Stands modifiers ext. $300
Flash bracket and off camera cord $180
Bags $200
light stand and backgrounds, $400
I'm up to $6410 plus small things like batteries, filters, tripod, teleextender, light meter, and odd ball stuff that nickel and dimes you out of more money.
I'm sure its well over $7000.

It never fails to amaze me how other folks are so interested in how others spend their money. Why does it matter?
Next the question will be; what did you earn last year, how much is your mortgage/rent, what's your gas bill.
Of what possible concern is it of anyone. Is the green monster of envy raising it's ugly head?

There will always be someone who had more/bigger/better stuff than you or I so it's not a pissing contest. All of us who spend our hard earned money on camera equipment belong to the same fraternity so it's only natural to seek the comfort of others who have travelled the same road as us.

Just wondering how much people have invested in their cameras, lenses and accessories? I have about $3,800 so far in about 1 year.
I don't invest. It's a hobby and I spend money on it.
I've spent about 1.5k or so. When I was shooting digital, I had a 6k autofocus system which I sold with a loss.

From a standing start in August last year (5D and 24-105 kit) to my 17-40L last Friday, a total of £5,665. Add peripherals (batteries, cards, filters, etc), around £5,800.
But now I've a flexible kit that meets my present needs, expenditure should be minimal for the foreseeable . . .

I'm somewhere around $8-9000. My wife will kill me if I spend any more. For a hobby it's alot of money.
I want to make a point of something here. My friend was telling me I was dumb to pay $1,200 for one lens or any money towards photography for that matter. I called him out on this one saying he had recently put $5k into his car to make it faster, which is his hobby. I am starting a business with photography so I am slowly buying what I need now out of pocket. But even if I weren't buying for business purposes would it be much different than a person who buys a car for 10k, 20k, 30k, or more. The value of a car drops as soon as you drive off the lot with it while an L lens will hold its value and sell well on the used market for much longer. The 5 grand my friend spent on his car is for the most part gone. He will never make any money from it. On the other hand I will be running my business off of something that started out as a hobby and will make a living from it.
Basically. 10 or 15 grand into photography even as a hobby is no different than buying a new car.

somewhere around eight or nine grand. Not a lot in comparison.. but, a bit of a sum for me. I remember when I started and thought that my 1,500 bucks would get me settled up just fine and I couldn't imagine what else I would need..
