Try using the camera's internal flash and see if the sb800 will sync.

just had a quick play and yes i can get the SB800 to sync with the 20D

so i could set the SB800 and the 580EX both up as remote flashes and try to get some intresting effects

One thing that you may lose is the 580EX's ability to control the output of the SB800 -- with multiple Speedlites, you can set the lighting ratio so that you get just the proper relationship between the main and the slave flashes. If the SB800 isn't built to be controlled by the 580EX, or the 580EX isn't built to emit the commands to set the output of the SB800 you may simply get the full flash output, which may well be too much for some situations.

But, since you already have it, it's terrific to experiment, and perhaps you can use a diffuser to lessen the output of the SB800 to achieve better balance.

Enjoy!

Did you verity that it's syncing with the main flash and not the pre-flash? Best way to test that is to use 2nd curtain and a long shutter speed like 1 sec. The flash should sync with the second flash that comes a second after you release the shutter.
