The little drebel would have been there for me.
I forgot all the stories on here about r/r lens...tried on/off no joy.
when I did turn it off the info screen on the top didn't go out either
well I r/r'd the lens and its ok but the shot is long gone....
it was with the 100-400.
So now I am in the lockup club.........
I am so pissed

Just a couple questions:
1. Were you able to get it going again by removing the battery?
2. What were you doing at the time?
3. What lens?
4. Which firmware version?
I haven't heard many of these stories recently, and I thought the problem was pretty well handled.

Sounds like yours has an older firmware on it, but why try all that anyway?
Just open the battery door....close it....ready to shoot in under 2 seconds.
What firmware did your 20D come with? Did you flash it to 1.1.0 yet?
Also, now I always take a shot or two after changing a lens, because from what I've heard, and in my own experience, a high percentage of the lockups are the first shot after a lens change.

I just r/r'd the lens and it was working again. on/off didnt do it and the top lcd screen didnt go off???
100-400
I was clicking about 1 per/sec, 4 shots then lockup
version 1.1.0
thanks
I had taken 20 pics over the past 30 min, not a r/r issue
I can't be stopping to open and close a BATTERY DOOR !!!!
is it to early for a cold one?????

I wasn't implying opening and closing the battery door is an acceptable workaround, just the fastest way I know of to clear just about any lockup.
I've had about 5 lockups in 2,500 shots, and have been lucky enough not to miss any good shots because of it.
I haven't heard much about lockups in a while, and I yours is the first lockup I've heard of with 1.1.0 firmware, so hopefully it was just an isolated incident.

Ummm,
I just got a 20D w/ a BG-E2 grip (firmware 1.1.0). Is there a problem using them? I'm about to leave for Yellowstone and if the grip is an issue I'll leave it off. I'd hate to miss once in a lifetime shots if it could have been avoided.

I just had a lockup exactly like this one with firmware 1.1.0
I was using a 17-40L which has been on my camera for several weeks without event. I was happily shooting away, using the * button to focus, and I noticed after a few shots that I got no focus confirmation beep. Turning off the camera left the top LCD on with the settings at the time. The conditions were daylight on a miserable English day (at Tower Bridge actually).
This is about the 3rd lockup I've had since getting my 20D in September.
Does anyone know whether Canon are still working on the problem?

I know this doesn't help but..
I got one of the very first 20D's in September with firmware 1.02.
I've since used firmware 1.04, 1.05, 1.10.
I've shot a few thousand pictures with many different lenses and lots of changes (I only have primes). I've never had a single lockup.
With my 300D, I had 2 lockups in 4 months.

Some of the older grips for the 20D flex and lose conection with the camera body contacts resulting in problems and the camera has to be reset.

If your grip has a "dot" on the battery door then it is one of the reworked versions that Canon fixed.

Ahhh... I did not realize that the grip had been overhauled,.. I may actually get one then.
I have oly had one lock up with the 20D since getting it in August,. and that was with the original Firmware...
Definitelyt flash the newest firmware,.. and yes,. popping the battery door is much quicker than removing the lens.

And you can send in the one you already have for a rehab. I have elected to not send mine in. It flexes, but I have put my own "fix" on it and it's perfectly fine and no longer flexes. I don't have the desire to pay to ship it to Canon and be without it for 2 weeks. I have had ZERO lockups.

I don't have a grip, so it's not that.
My 300d had 2 Err99s in the 8 months I owned it. My 20D didn't have any lockups prior to 1.1.0. Perhaps I should rewind to an earlier firmware or something.

Really?
here is what they are saying over at Miranda's
"Any BG-E2 with a serial # 05xxx and higher with a red dot after the number
of applied to the battery door, has had the countermeasures added. Meaning
that if your grip is series 5000 and higher and has a red dot, it means
that is was stripped apart, 2 washers have been added and the contact pins
extended as well as having a switch contact enlarged."

An error 99 is not the same as a lockup.... what lenses did you use on your 300D? You can get error 99 if you're using a non-Canon lens that's not 100% compatible with the camera, or if the electrical contacts between the lens and camera are dirty (try cleaning them).

Well my 300d had a Canon 50mm f1.4 and a 24-85mm Canon zoom. Both are now sold and I don't miss either of them :D The 300d is also sold so no need to diagnose it any further.
The question for me is whether I'm going to accept 3 or 4 lockups in 4 months from the 20d, or try to do something about it. I think it's only happened with my 17-40L on the 20D. The Tamron 28-75 (hugs his Tamron!!) has never been on the camera when it locked up.

On my 20D w/firmware 1.1 and Canon 100-400L IS I can get lockup. I could get it with the Sigma 50-500 BigMa as well. I always take the battery out, turning off and on will not clear it, but will try the trick of just popping the door next time. I do not have the extra battery grip at this time.
Mine comes as best I can figure it out . . . when or after it seems to hunt focus in low light and or low contrast situations. (Which is almost always for me this time of year.) It does slow one down, lol, but stuff happens. I think, but I am not sure here that changing the focus 'hunt' switch on the 100-400 to the longer setting, for me, seems to help. At times it just looses where it is, it would seem, and then with low contrast can not get a 'fix' so it does the only thing it can, bomb. I have started pointing at power poles and such to give it a reference and then 'aiming' at the target. This seems to resolve the issue as well.
I am plenty new 'round here so use a pinch of salt or two after you read this.
