Hi all,
Well I have been dabating back and forth about shooting raw or jpeg. Well, today it was set at jpeg and for some reason I switched it to raw and jpeg. I was at a autograph sesion with Jason Werth and the Philly Fanatic. Well I had a brain fart and had the flash set to manual and the camera on SV. I normally shoot with it on SV when using flash, but not with the flash on manual. I could not figure out why my images where so dark and the camera was saying f29 for a fstop. Well duh! But why where they dark? I would think I was blowing them out. Well whatever. Well I was able to save most of them with using DPP with the raw files. The jpegs are trash. If I had not swtiched it I would have gotten nothing. I need to shoot raw now since I am loosing my mind and forget my name half the time. LOL! A mind is a horrable thing to loose. Well, I just blaim it on my pain medication.

Welcome to the Dark side.

Now, if RAW could just fix when I accidently leave the camera set at ISO1600 from the previous night, I would be in heaven!

I feel your pain, Lee. I've done that a couple of times after using my 40D at ISO 1600 at a wedding, then going to the studio the next morning to shoot, and wonder why my images are blown out... doh!

Light meter is metering for ISO 100, not 1600. A good 4-5 stops easy, and I wonder why I'm overexposing :D.

Bet ya won't do that again!
I've done this once but caught it on review within 3 shots. Now when I unholster my camera the first thing I do is review my settings.

Life is hard.

I've heard elephants can't tapdance. I guess they don't like Comics, either.

But then, with the OP's self-portraits, what did you expect?

Canon cameras will stop down as far as they can when the flash is on M and Tv or P is used. On Av, the camera will default to the highest shutterspeed availiable (either the sync speed or the top shutterspeed if HSS is set).
The only way to use the camera with a flash on Manual, is to set the camera to Manual as well. Silly design by Canon IMO.

The reason the shots were dark, is that at ISO 100, f/22 will give good exposure for a subject at about 1,5 meters distance, f/29 at about a meter (580EX, full power, depending on zoom setting)
