Damn, the lighting is terrible! It's too bad these smaller shows can never seem to afford a proper lighting rig.

Did you run a noise filter on them? IMO, the noise should be left intact.. the grittier the better! LOL!

These are nice, the dramatic lighting is actually working for me, showing a mood.

Nice pics. The guy in #8 needs to work out more body parts than his chest. He is really disproportional.

Great action shots. Seems like one of the hardest sports prob to cover.

man, these are really great--really captured the intensity of a sport that only a very limited amount of guys would even contemplate. looks like #3 is a Kimbo Slice wannabe...

jimmywires

funny you should say that ... they call him baby slice lol

Great work. Shooting these small shows can be painful with the lighting.

How do you know it's just not his genetics?

How do you know it's just not his genetics?

With the little body building I have done as well as 7 years or wrestling and MMA starting last year I have yet to this day seen a chest like that paired with the rest of his body. I could be wrong and it could be genetics but I doubt it. When I started lifting I loved benching and over did it to the point where I began so look somewhat disproportional, and it took a while to even things out so it is something that happens.

Over the years I've seen a number of strikers that are built like that, but very few grapplers. There may not be any real correlation just throwing that out there.

Nice action, some look a touch underexposed which could have been correct by dropping your shutter speed down. Some of them are quite low at 1/250 or /1/320 where as one is 1/6400 and the rest 1/1600 but given the conditions they are good.

Is flash allowed at MMA events?

Darren

Darren I'm going to use flash next time when I'm in the cage. but no i wouldn't use flash when the fight is on

Who cares if he looks disproportional.. MMA is not a body building contest...

Of course it is not. I never said it was. I just think that for MMA other muscle groups would be more useful. That is just my opinion.

What if he had a small chest? Would you comment on his chest being too small? I hope not...

Nice work, JW.

I've got 2 more weeks until I shoot my next event. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be getting into the UFC when it comes here. Dammit.

Your taking this somewhat personal huh?

My bad Jimmy. The fourth photo is definitely my favorite. You worked well with the light. I know how tough lighting like this can be. I shot a few wrestling matches with a dark gym and one overhead light. The pics I took didn't look so good so I just went with the flash. The 7th Pic looks really cool as well. The ref in the background is somewhat distracting though. I don't know if photoshoping him out into the black background would be ethical or not though.

Shooting MMA is definately an "as is" proposition- flash is generally not allowed. It's a balance of shooting action in ambient light, and the lighting usually isn't in the photographers favor. But, JW's coming along just fine. It appears he's discovered the joy of custom white balance, too.
