Where Does DPP Save Edit Data?

Hi,

I'm finding myself using Digital Photo Professional (DPP) alongside Lightroom. (If I'm in a hurry to print RAW files I'll use DPP because they appear to need little or no pp.) I know that LR uses sidecar files and a catalog, but where are the edits in DPP saved?

Assuming you use the Save, Save As, or Convert and Save commands the editing instructions are written directly to the RAW file.

I think that's because DPP recognises your camera's custom settings, whereas LR doesn't.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I exit DPP it does ask if I want to Save, but it does not give a "Save As" option, even if I perform a trimming (crop) action. The sa can me is true with Jpgeg files. At any time I can "Revert to Shot Settings" and all the edits, including crops are removed. What's I find interesting is that after DPP edits, LR doesn't tell me that the file's Metadata has been changed. Would I get this dialog box in LR if I had edited the file in another proram?

Yes, I think you're right. The problem is I spend so much time messing about with LR just to get a printable RAW file, whereas in DPP I'm done in no time. (Unless the horizon needs straightening that is!

Well, you don't have to wait until exiting DPP to save. You can use the "Save As" command as an intermediate step while still in DPP's editing window, in cases where you prefer not to overwrite the original RAW file, for example.

The reason Lightroom does not alert you to changes in the metadata is the essential difference between a program like Lightroom and DPP, which is based on Canon's SDK. Lightroom detects changes in XMP (an Adobe version of the XML language) whereas DPP does not use XMP.
