I've heard a lot of good things about Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/). Sorry I can't offer any first-hand advice about it though.

Lightroom may suite your purpose, also I found this: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=464509 may be of use.

Good luck,

Kristan

Yes there is. WaterMark factory lets you make whatever watermark you want and put it where it you want in any color and size...totally flexible.

i love watermark factory.

i've used it with a logo with drop shadow in .png format, and also for adding text, or both. lots of options, including positioning.

and most importantly, in my trials of watermark software, this one is very very quick in processing a batch of images, and it barely disturbs the original jpg.

I have a script that you can modify to do just that. I know it works in CS2 and earlier.

If you would like a copy, just email me at preachersphotography at gmail dot com.

You simply drop the script into the right folder ( \Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Scripts ) and then edit it with a text editor.

It applies this border (including Exif info)

A little experimentation and you should be able to comment out the Exif if you don't want it and reposition the copyright info where you want it. You can change the text style, the border size etc.

You can even rename the fire (though not the extension) and save multiple versions for various tasks.

To use it, you click File>Scripts> YourScriptName

Mike's Framing Script (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=75175) is a very inexpensive plug-in for Photoshop that lets you do all this and more. I can't imagine getting by without it. The title, exif, and copyright are all tailorable as is the drop shadow. Frames can be added....and it resizes.
